Heh. Ya got me. No no, it wasn't meant like that. Beloved, like an old, trustworthy friend I guess. And yeah, my lady is great! We made sure it wasn't going to be a suffer-fest from a touring distance perspective: 40-75 km/day, and we only camped two nights. The last full day was spent doing wine tours in Naramata; a great end to a great trip!

I took this around Ontario last summer (up from Toronto over Manitoulin Island, around Superior),
and it did ok. I used the trailer because the frame was too light for big panniers, if I do a long trip again I think I might just bite the bullet and get a heavier frame.

As you can see I have my entire life dangling from the handlebars, what can I say, it was 8am and I'd been in and out of the front pack all morning with the changing weather.

I also have two 4-6 litre water jugs on the rear panniers, I seem to need to carry a bath-tub's worth of liquid with me on some tours..

Looks rock solid and well kitted out with good choices across the board in the fit for purpose vein.

Cool pic, Jim. But I thought the Crusoe fork wouldn`t accept a rack? Did you have to do a work-around to mount it, or do I have that wrong?

My Surly LHT. Typically I carry one less water bottle (solid 2lt of ice hidden in the blue tarp). Otherwise I carry a very heavy load, around 55kg. I built the bike myself, so there is no standard of parts or models. 4 months into a 2 years trip through South America. So far only punctures and a few dodgy bottle cages - everything else has worked fine. No broken spokes or cracked rims etc.

FMJ, all the best with the rest of your trip. Are you writing up about it at all, CGOAB or something?
As someone who weighs about 62kg, I cant imagine lugging around 55 kilos. I admire you being able to, but still can't imagine it. The wheels must be very well made indeed if they are handling it all well.
Vaya bien y buenos suertes.

Thanks.

The rack mounts the same way as the NWT. The Crusoe fork actually fits the Bike Fridays folding rack better then the NWT since its more narrow. I think those brazeons are standard but I could be wrong since I specified it would be used for touring when I ordered it.

Hi DJB,

Thanks very much for your best wishes. I don't weigh much more, I barely tip the scale at 72kg and that was before I started the tour. Being my first tour, I suppose I was always going to be heavy until I learned what I could do without. I also no no different in terms of weight, so in some respects this is my 'norm'. Wheels were handmade in England for me (700cc, Rigida Sputnik rims, combination of Sapim Race and Strong spokes with Shimano LH hubs and a Shimano SLX 9 speed casette).

Other than writing a blog, I have not done much with the cycling detail. The cycling is really a means to an end for me - the main emphasis is birdwatching. I rarely cycle the 'usual north/route, so don't bump into many other cyclists. I had never heard of CGOAB until you mentioned it, but thanks for the info - looks very useful!
