Bicycle Touring: A 1955 English Special

I enjoy watching videos about touring more than I like reading about them. I found this unique video filmed in 1955 about some tourists! Hope you find the time to enjoy it as I did.
It's also nice to see not much has really changed in regard to the mindset with tourists. Must've been nice back then.
Cheers.

Same thread title over in Classic & Vintage started 13 minutes after this one.

My reply from there.

"I've seen that video years ago and downloaded it. I think it's a fantastic video and well worth watching even if it's just to see the various types of bicycles used on the tours..

Cheers"

Actually, it's an interesting video showing the use of trains to get to the tour start and also shows a number of ways of adding stowed gear to a bike for a day tour. I quite enjoyed it.

Cheers

Yes, & also the scene of the bunch walking up a hill which didn't look super-steep. Some riders look to have carbide lamps. The bikes & clothes looked rather fancy for that time, seems like a more prosperous-than-average bunch.

The young lady in the brown jacket at the beginning and elsewhere in the film reminds me of a very young Queen/Princess Elizabeth.

They all looked lie t hey were really enjoying the outing.

It's a shame bike storage on trains isn't like that anymore. You're lucky if there is any

She was a peach! I did a little math, and if she were say... 19 at the time, she would be 83 now.

At 06:07, note how narrow his bars were. I guess this was the norm back then.

Some people prefer a narrow handlebar for ease of getting into and out of narrow doorways, hallways or similar. I have an MTB converted to a single-speed that has an inverted cut-down dropbar of a 12 inches length. It's fantastic for getting into the elevator and along the narrow hallway of my building.

Cheers

Oh my Lord! That is horrible! So we narrow our bars for hallways and doors? Most sensible bars aren't any wider than 42 cm and they can be turned sideways through doors anyhow. Riding all day long with a folded in chest, just for the sake of a doorway? Madness, I say. Madness!

It's just one of many bikes I have and is the only one with such a narrow handlebar. You should see some of the narrow spaces I ride through out in the woods. It's a fun bike but definitely not my main ride.

Cheers

Actually it's a lot of fun to ride. t's surprisingly easy to keep it going straight too. I guess it's mostly about body balance. I love it even though the rear brake is a Suntour Roller-Cam mounted under the chainstays.

I was only joking. I am sure it is a great bike to ride. I like the look, too. I always laugh when people talk about bad handling with narrow bars, short stems, etc. Usually you get used setups like that in a matter of a few moments, and never notice it after that.

I realize the joking manner. One time for fun I put a short stem on backwards. Now riding that bike was interesting to say the least.

They look even more awesome on a narrow tire road bike.

I sometimes do rather unusual things with some of my bikes; such as putting a 9-speed 11-19 teeth corncob cassette onto my MTB with 1.5" smooth tires.

Cheers

Neine! Das ist Gut!

I've ridden it a lot and it's easily controlled. I've ridden it some pretty long distances. The bus racks are another place where it excells for ease of maneuvering. If it was a fixed gear sans brakes bike, the that'd that'd be a death trap.

Cheers
