Missed it.

I bought a PDG "series" bike this month. It took forever to get to me. When I opened the box, the seat tube was cracked and one crack went under and around one of the seat stays. After taking it to 4 bike shops in Milwaukee and Waukesha and one frame builder- the bike is not feasably repairable. The seller is being really cool and will be refunding me. As soon as I saw this post, I was thinking I'd get lucky and get one in spite of that fiasco.

Oh well.

The rear U brake mounted on the chain stays works awesome, in terms of stopping power. Stronger than Canti's, NO doubt. They are a bit heavy but VERY cool in my book. I have them on my 1988 Stumpjumper urban assault bike and love them.

Rebuilding one right now. Switching it back to a rigid fork. Before and a current pic on the stand. Someone added some cool top of the line goodies over the years, Ringle quill stem (was stuck and had to break it to get it out) some White Industries custom built wheels and some Grafton pedals. Fun stuff.

those chainstays are pretty cool. Are you going to keep the boutique parts on there or go a different route?

Yes they are called "G Stays". Not sure what the design was supposed to improve, but they are different. Other than changing back to a rigid fork and going with some trigger shifters instead of the grip shifts, everything else will go back on.

Kraynick's bike shop in Pittsburgh may have the fork you need. They had a lot of these last time I was there...

I really like it for my relatively tame on-road and dirt trail use. It is also a blast to ride and show off a beautiful red-white-and-blue Schwinn on national holidays, particularly since I bought mine from a San Diego firefighter. I found a fair bit of data on the firstflightbikes website, but the component list does not match mine at all.
I seriously considered one of those in 1988.
bought a Ritchey that was right next to it.

Super easy to adjust if you flip the bike upside down. Definitely uncomfortable to adjust upright in a stand.

Chain slap reduction was the goal, I think.

I'd stick with the gripshifts or put some thumbshifters on if keeping the 7-speed setup. Finding good 7-sp triggers is tough.

I got boned on a CL deal for a PDG for $50 last year. Guy was selling several bikes, Seller sold the Paramount to another guy who had come to buy a different bike, 10 minutes before me. Instead of honoring the fact that I was coming, he sold the Paramount to the other guy, who didn't buy the bike he'd come for. I didn't buy any other bike from him, so his reward for going for the quick buck was that he sold only one bike that day, rather than two.

Consolation prize was a '91-ish Impact Pro MOS design, same G-stay frame design, maybe a notch down from the P-mount, came up a couple weeks later for $35.
