2013 Specialized Roubaix Expert - Pricing help needed

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

2013 Specialized Roubaix Expert - Pricing help needed

My LBS has a NOS 2013 Roubaix Expert that he's selling for $2500 Canadian...roughly $1950 USD with today's exchange rate. Is that a good deal for a 2013 bike. It's my size, love the colour (black and blue) and fits the bill perfectly for an endurance bike to compliment my TCR Advanced.

What say ye brethren?

I've also been looking at a 2014 Defy Advanced 1 (full Ultegra) for $2300 CAD and a 2015 Defy Advanced Pro 1 for $2650. Not to crazy about the last option due to the disc brakes.

Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I own a 2014 with 11sp 105. See if they'll throw in the CG-R seat post. The new ones come with it and it really makes a difference on the very stiff SL4 Roubaix frame.

I think that's a fair price. They were around $3200 new if I recall correctly. The 10sp Ultegra groupset isn't as good as the new 11sp stuff IMO but that can be upgraded in the future for not a lot of money. Bear in mind that the Roubaix is probably due for a refresh next year.

I think it's a very good price. I've got a 2013 Comp that I paid a little more than that for a couple months ago. I think these 10 speed bikes aren't selling since 11 speed is out so good deals to be had.

I wouldn't spend that kind of money on 10 speed Ultegra. I'd rather have 11 speed 105 and I have had then both

What does it take to convert from 10 speed to 11 speed? I know that the chain would need to be switched. FD? RD?

Thanks for your input!

If it's the SL3 model then jump on it. If it's an SL4, don't.

It's a SL4 frame. Is there a big difference between the two?

The biggest expense is a rear wheel with an 11sp hub. If you don't own one, or plan to upgrade the wheels, you need to factor that into your budget. Then you'll need an entire 11sp groupset plus some kind of bottom bracket adapter (I use the Praxis adapter.) I don't know if there are still crazy cheap deals on 11sp 105 (<$350 for the entire groupset from the UK sites.) My SL4 frame was a warranty replacement had 10sp 105 on it. I installed 11sp 105 on it myself and sold the old stuff for $250 on Craiglist so it ended up being a pretty cheap upgrade.

Thank you for the detailed response. If that is the case, it's a lot more than what I am prepared to do. I was thinking that $2500 CAD is a good price for this bike seeing that the original price was around $3700 CAD back in 2013. Not sure if he is prepared to sell for less considering its a 2013 model with 10 speed versus the latest 11 speed. I'm positive that the 10 speed is a more than worthy group set.

It just depends on what your plans are with the wheels. Many people upgrade them pretty quickly. I had a 2013 SL4 Expert loaner for a few weeks during the warranty process and can tell you from experience that the stock wheels aren't great. The rear would rub the brakes when standing and pedaling hard. The new Roubaix's probably aren't much better. Bikes at this price point unfortunately don't come with great stock wheels.

If I were to go with the Roubaix, there are no immediate plans to upgrade the wheels. I would use them and when my wallet permitted it :-) I'd upgrade to something better.

You mind following that up with any manner of fact or conjecture as to why? The SL4 is the newer "better" frame, so....

I ride one of these and whether it's 10 or 11 and has a fancy springy seat post, I would jump on that like my high school sweety after prom.

Newer isn't necessarily better. Many and perhaps most that have ridden the SL4 Roubaix believe the rear of the bike is overly harsh. If the SL3 Roubaix was improved upon, I would own its replacement. Reality is, the SL3 Roubaix in my opinion is probably the best endurance bike ever created. Stiffness, handling and geometry are unrivaled...and the bike I own...I ordered the SL3 Pro frameset from Specialized and built with Campy. My guess in a year or so, Specialized will regress the replacement SL5 Roubaix to the stiffness of the SL3...perhaps with some other small tweaks...which will make the bike better fit its endurance label...which should be less than race stiffness for greater comfort. This isn't the first rodeo with making a bike too stiff from Specialized. Spesh responded from the pro peloton with the SL2 Tarmac which is noodly for a race bike by current standards and made the SL3 Tarmac uber stiff. Moved the needle too far the other way. Pro's complained. The SL4 Tarmac resulted which has great vertical compliance and some would argue the best non aero race bike on the planet. That is the way design works. It is iterative. The vision and targets of the designers doesn't always resonate with the demographic of the bike in the hands of owners. All designs are a work in progress.

Sorry, didn't realize I had to write an oeuvre to post in this thread.

On my Comp it came with DT Swiss 3.0's which aren't great. I immediately upgraded to some NOS wheels that I got off EBay. But like anything 10 speed, the price has come down quite a bit since 11 speed came out. Personally I have no desire or need for 11 speed so I'm happy to take advantage of the lower prices. The Expert model comes with the 4.0 wheels but again, I've not read many glowing reviews of these DT Swiss wheels. They will be good enough but may not be what you're wanting later down the road.

The purpose of this thread was really to get an idea of whether or not $2500 CAD for a 2013 Roubaix Expert is a good deal. I'm sure that Ultegra 11s are better than 10s. As I have stated earlier, even though the 11s are the next generation of Ultegras, the Ultegras 10s have been around for a long time and have served many riders very well. As for the frameset, there will surely be people for and against the SL4.

Some people have stated that it is a good deal and I tend to think that too. For the ones that would pass on this deal, what would you recommend in an endurance bike for that kind of money? There is also the 2014 Defy Advanced 1 (full Ultegra 11s) for $2300 CAD that I can pick up too. Is that more bang for my buck?

I'd look at the Trek Emonda H2 geometry. The one with 11s Shimano 105 is a great deal and it's supposed to have a great ride. The Roubaix SL4 is every bit as stiff as a race bike. I can't even ride mine without the CG-R seat post installed.

Thanks for the info regarding the seat post. It's something that I'll keep in mind if I decide to go forward with the Roubaix. My current bike, a TCR Advanced, is very stiff too and I really don't mind it. I like the idea of a more relaxed geometry and hence why I'm looking to get an endurance bike. I'll also set up an appointment to take the Roubaix for a ride before making a purchase.

I really appreciate all the feedback in this thread!

Ok, went back to have another look at the 2013 Roubaix and the store upgraded all the components to Ultegra 11 speed. They replaced the 105 cassette for an Ultegra. The Tiagra chain to Ultegra too. They replaced the 2013 crank for a 2015 Ultegra crank. They replaced the DT Axis wheels with Fulcrum Four S.

They also increased the price by $300.

I'm happy that the bike is now full 11 speed Ultegra but the additional $300 is less welcomed! :-(

What do you guys think?

I thinks it a good deal. I have a 2015 ultegra group but it has an FSA crank. I would prefer the ultegra crank. It has all the current stuff for over 1000 bucks less. If it its and you like it. Get it

SL4 Ultegra Roubaix with CG/R is a great ride. Just sayin'.
