The "bait bike" vids where the bike is tied to a tree are still in the realm of "joking" but assault with a baseball bat is not.

Being a thief is not without pitfalls; sometimes, it's can get you killed. In my opinion, they got off easy. Probably not workable today but when I was on the job the guys who took the bikes and got beat with bats would have gone to the hospital and then jail. I had a similar call once where the complainant used a WOOD canoe paddle on a couple of thieves, turned on it's edge The only people that went to jail (after the hospital) were the thieves.

I go back and forth on this- on one hand, the thief is going on to private property and thieving.
On the other hand, and the really bad hand- these 2 were doing it for youtube likes- not really to catch bike thieves.

Nice of them to provide all that evidence

Not enough facts given to express an opinion one way or the other. IMHO. How bad the injuries? How many times was this done? Did the de-escalate once the bike back in their hands? How big were the victims/thieves, and were any kids assaulted here? The video really doesn't give us any details.

Stopping the thief is one thing, but hitting him with a bat , which can be a deadly weapon, is another. In some ways this resembles "spring gun " cases, where someone sets a spring gun rigged to shoot trespassers. It is against public policy. Courts usually if not always find the person who sets the trap crimminally or civilly liabel, even though the victim has committed an offense.

The advantages are obvious...no physical contact, and I can still go outside, film whoever falls into it, and post it on Youtube. My hands are clean.

As much as I hate bike thieves, I can see where some thing it is justified.
But really, these type of vigilantes are disturbed and have no right to operate such a sting without proper authority!

when I was a kid I remember reading something about “burglar proofing your house with concrete.” I thought it was the funniest thing.

This thread is quickly moving away from cycling related. When that happens, it turns into P&R material. Sorry but it’s closed.
