Medicare A

For the oldsters
Coming north for a very short out and back. Maybe 4-5 days each way. Is Medicare A good enough, or need I buy travel insurance? Thanks in advance.

Medicare does not cover you outside the U.S. Even in the U.S., Part A only covers hospital expenses. Part B is for medical expenses. Look it up online for the details..

I see you are in South America. Travel Insurance would work.

If you want more specifics we would need to know if you are a US resident, Expat, ever worked in the US and for how long. If you currently have Medicare, if so do you also have part B and a Drug plan or Supplement (Medigap).

Where "North" you are going.

Then you could get more specific info.

Expat. I have Medicare A. My question refers to having an accident out on the road, which required a hospital visit. It's difficult to glean details online--they seem more interested in generalities. For example, would an ambulance be covered? Emergency room? North means midwest USA.

How much risk are you willing to endure? Only you can answer that one but Part B and a supplemental wouldn't be a poor choice if you were going to be here long.

Dumbed down Part A Medicare just covers what happens in the hospital less deductible.

I checked with some colleagues and IMG travel insurance was their suggestion.

Good luck and have a fun trip!

Thanks to all. I have it by default and have no idea how if it works.

It generally works pretty well. Just carry your new Medicare card with you and show it to the hospital on admission.

Medicare Part A covers:
*All inpatient hospital costs day 1-60
*Most hospital costs days 61-90
*60 lifetime reserve days- (60 1x use days used after day 60)
*3 pints of blood.

Rehab:
*Days 1-20 for short term rehab in a nursing home (*after 3 day qualifying hospital admission)

You pay:
*$1406 deductable
*$352 / day copay inpatient hospital days 61-90.
*$352 / day if any lifetime reserve days are used.
*$704 / day after hospital day 90 / lifetime reserve days.

Rehab:
*$176 per day for days 21-100 in short term rehab in a skilled nursing facility.
* All cost after day 100 ($350 or so per day)
