Hey everyone,

I'm fairly mechanically inclined, but am new to bike mechanics.

I have a month old hybrid, X5 RD, and recently swapped tires on the rims. Wheels were re-installed properly as far as I can see (pulled and did a second time), but I now have a chain chattering noise at the rear cassette (9 speed) on the three largest rings. Particularly third gear. The chatter occurs on those gears no matter what ring I'm on with the FD, so I assume it's some adjustment I need to do to the RD.

I flip the bike and go through the gears, and it changes throughout the cassette without issue. It just now chatters on the three tallest rings, particularly third, which is the worst.

Any idea what I should adjust to try to quiet this chattering sound?

Front = rings
Rear = cogs.
There is no front cassette, so rear cassette is redundant.

Anyway-
Is the noise loudest on the largest RING, which means you are cross chaining?

You might try turning the barrel adjuster on the RDER 1/4 turn at a time and see if that helps/hurts.
Keep track of where you started in case that isn't the problem.

Another possibility is that your cable needs to be cleaned/lubed.
As you go to the larger cogs, you typically use more cable pull/tension. (some RDER's are opposite)
IF the cable is "sticky", you may have the tension too loose which tends to quiet the smaller cogs.

Chain too short can cause chatter on the largest cassette cogs. How I know ... was replacing my chain, noticed I could feasibly take two links out, and impulsively did so thinking it might make it hold better on the chain ring when in the smallest cog ... the chatter was the first thing I noticed.

Thanks for the explanation and helping me understand the terms better, it helps make learning easier.
I'm at work and uncertain which ring it's loudest on. I'll check it out when I get home and report back.



Don't think it's this. Stock chain on pretty new bike. It just started after swapping a tire.
