Another dry, frost free Monday. Went out on one of my standard loop rides that takes advantage of our regional trail system for most of the route.

Nearly finished, I turn off the Snoqualmie Valley Trail taking a little catch trail to access my Neighborhood.
Passing through a little stand of trees I must have sucked up a stick into my front fender.
UP my rear wheel goes immediately - I’m looking at the ground and had just enough time to tuck my head in before landing on my back.
OOF!
No damage except the front fender. Have a few aches and pains this morning but nothing serious.
Glad I was pedaling slow.

Nice Winter riding weather for the first time in a couple of weeks so took a nice ride on the MT200 on the back roads around Fairplay. Actually saw some dry pavement for the first time in about a month.

The most interesting place I rode today was on my front rim for about thirty feet. Yikes! Cruising down a bumpy descent for a few minutes, and POP! Managed to ride it out. Feeling fortunate.
Nashbar tube that came with the bike, new tire, new rim strip that I’m not crazy about, only had it at about 60-70 psi. Boy, I’d rather not have that happen again!
Bummer, the rim cut the sidewall before I could stop.

Enjoyed a couple of the local micro-valleys in winter motif. The long horned bulls are gone but the feel remains soggy and quiet (except at commute hours).
It’s a bit boring ...... but in a nice way.
The triple makes the final climb a good outing, rather than too much of a vintage mash.

When you get home pump it up to maximum and examine the line where the tire wall meets the rim. If there is a distortion wherein the seam on the tire rises you have at least three possible things going wrong - the tube is under the tire bead and forcing it up, the tire wall has structurally failed or (and this happened to me twice a month ago for the first time in more than fifty years of fixing bikes) the actual structural integrity of the rim has been compromised, and under load it splays apart and a perfectly good tube and tire are ruined.
All in all you're a lucky man not to fall badly.

I also did that route regularly when I lived in Palo Alto/Menlo Park from 1982-90. At times I rode it on my single speed Columbia middleweight, often passing others climbing up the hills and getting passed on the descents. Of course, I was in my 20s then.

Went to Zeeland (south NL) to pick up a new bike, but decided not to take it. The ride though was great. It snowed lightly, lots of wind (as usual there) and long dikes, polders and 'wielen': inlets of water where the dikes once broke. 'Wielen' in Dutch also means wheels, so kinda strange. Saw a harbour where the boats fall on dry sand due to the tide of the Northsea, an old railwayline with steam engines running in summertime and an old fortress, once defending the sea inlet against the French. So, no new bike, but a beautiful day.

A tube looks like that when the tire is not seated correctly and the tube lifts the tire bead off its seat and bang!
When you get home pump it up to maximum and examine the line where the tire wall meets the rim. If there is a distortion wherein the seam on the tire rises you have at least three possible things going wrong - the tube is under the tire bead and forcing it up, the tire wall has structurally failed or (and this happened to me twice a month ago for the first time in more than fifty years of fixing bikes) the actual structural integrity of the rim has been compromised, and under load it splays apart and a perfectly good tube and tire are ruined.
All in all you're a lucky man not to fall badly.

Nice sunny and chilly one today. The biggie apart from getting out there was to grab more alpaca wool socks and some heavy duty over shoes. It worked out, and quite well at that!

Short ride today. I went out on the bike yesterday to meet my wife when she finished work, as I thought my route would give 500 miles for the month. I checked Strava as I got to her car, and it showed 498 miles.
Anyhow, today's ride was just a quick one up the road for a few miles and then the cycle trail along the length of Brean Down, following the old military road to the Victorian fort at the end of the headland and back. Quite a cold day, the temperature was showing as 0 degrees C when I left, and as I got back onto the road on the way home it started snowing.
Approaching Brean Down Fort, Steep Holme Island ahead, welsh coast in the distance.
Heading back up over the Down
