Replacing kit lately; had some sticker shock when I looked at glove prices. I'm used to paying ~$20 for a pair, having them last a few years. Had great luck with Louis Garneau and Performance house brand stuff in the past, but availability of those brands is tough these days.

Anyhow, anyone got any recommendations for good gloves that are under $25? Gel is nice, but really don't anything too terribly fancy. Just like sturdy.

I guess you could buy some work gloves at your big box home supply store and cut the fingers short. But then they might not last you as long and you'll end up spending more in the long run.

20 bucks today is like 3 dollars in the early seventies.

You might just get used to not using gloves. I know many that don't. I used to not wear gloves for cycling until about 15 years ago.

I usually get whatever the cheapest Pearl Izumi's are at a given time. They've worked great for me for years. The last pair I picked up last year was about $25.

I buy my full hand gloves at box store like Menards. They have all types and way cheaper and much better than any cycling gloves. I don't understand the thing about buying cycling gloves.. Gloves are gloves and they are plentiful all over. Myself I have to have full finger gloves I am a jazz guitarist and I would if not just to have the full protection covering. I have gloves that are years old.

My first pair of GORE gloves are 7-8 years old at this point and still going pretty strong (minus some logo wear). Honestly I am quite happy with them, they are super comfortable and quite durable and were $35 or so if memory serves me. Granted I did leave them in a jacket I hadn't worn in a while so I did loose a year on them but found them and all good. I have some Giro Jag gloves that are also quite nice but a couple years newer but still kicking. I have had a lot of gloves go bad but my GORE stuff generally has held up well. I still have some GORE shorts that are still wearable (though I switched to bibs a while back and don't really wear the shorts except on really casual rides when I just don't want bibs.

I have good luck with the finger-less hunting gloves that have padded palms and you can usually find for around 5 bucks. They would last an eternity if I would only take them off when doing trail maintenance. From riding ATVs and Snowmobiles I developed the habit of always wearing hand protection and now it feels weird when I don't. Summer time full fingers when I know I'll be doing some trail maint along the way I wear Mechanix-it's a throw back thing from mountain biking. But like others have mentioned, unless you're a fashion diva, there are lots of gloves reasonably priced that have all the same features as dedicated bike gloves.

Thanks for the recommendations. I prefer cycling gloves; most of my rides are ~2-3 hours in New Mexico, and heavier gloves don't work for me.

I forgot about Sierra and Steep/Cheap (weird as I got a great jacket there a month ago). Thanks! Also, I have Giro gloves I love ... glad to figure out good places to get more.

Check discount clothing/department stores like Ross, Marshalls, Burlington, etc. I see short finger cycling type gloves in the sporting goods aisles there pretty much every visit. Usually the gloves are aimed at general fitness and weight lifting, but a few weeks ago I found some adidas branded gloves that are indistinguishable from my Giro, Garneau, Bontrager and other brand cycling gloves. Cost a whole $5.

If you prefer more padding and/or knuckle guards, check hardware stores. Some appear to be aimed at guys with MMA or ninja fantasies, but others are more practical.

Yeah I like these too, though I didn't like the earlier editions, thought they felt more like work gloves, but the recent iterations are good. Fit well, comfortable, price and durable (for the cost + and they've lasted longer than 1 season)

I'm in the same boat. My Performance half finger gloves won't make it through the summer I'm sure but they've been great gloves. Just won't wear out even riding almost every day and laundering once a week. What little padding they had is long since gone so they are perfect now. Wish I'd have purchased a half dozen pair since I think they were less than $15.
