Raleigh International, slowly but surely
Hey C&V, i recently purchased this Raleigh International a few months ago, somebody tried to make it their SS project but luckly it still had some campy goods on it but not complete. It had been resprayed as well, I have been putting some money into it trying to find the parts but all i have left to buy is auto paint, decals, get my wheels built, brooks b-17, some small other details and parts. I need to put a year on it but i used sheldons serial decoder and got 72' but the lugs look more similar to a 73' or 74'.
Here is how it's going:
Headset: Nuovo record
Cranks: Nuovo record, replaced sugino chainrings on the way
Shifters: Campy NR? Vicenza Italy
Pedals: KKT Pro ace (Campy look alike)
Seatpost: Campy croc d'aune
Brakes: Trying to decide on Modolo Corsa or Universal center pulls
(most likely universal)
Wheels: NOS red label araya 27x1 bronze anodized
Hubs: Campy Athena?
freewheel: Sachs maillard ly-91 7 speed compact
derailleurs: Nuovo record rear, nuovo valentino front
bottom bracket: campy triomphe
bars: 3TTT grand prix
stem: Cinelli 1A
What do you guys think?
I'm excited! Hopefully it will be done by 4th of July, that's is when they close off PCH in huntington beach ca. for the parade. i spent most of my day going up and down PCH on my old peugeot but if i had this? That would be essential.
A question about the rear spacing, i want to run the sachs 7 speed but will there be enough room back there for that extra cog? I have a set of campy rims with 600 hubs with a 7 speed hyperglide, i have put them on quite a few bikes and have never had problems. Will this work the same with the raleigh? The cluster is really compact.
Thanks for the input in advance! Would love to hear what you guys think so far.

Looks like a '73 to me with those Capella lugs, Harry. A really terrific find! I'd be excited too!
I don't think you are going to cram a 7 spd in there without cold setting the frame. This is likely a 120 spacing as it sits, and probably the bikes that didn't give trouble were at least 126.

Hmm ok, any suggestions on a nice 6 speed English threaded besides Regina.

Sounds like a nice mix of parts, Harry. I can't wait to see it in action! Don't forget some good tires, too. Maybe some Paselas?
A '72 would've been a true 10 speed (double cranks with a 5 speed freewheel), and 5 speed cluster (even 4 speed cluster) suits Jan Heine from Bicycle Quarterly just fine.
A Brooks Pro saddle would be the saddle for the bike, which might even be found for less than a B-17.
I think, too, that Weinmann centerpulls would've been the original brakes, if you want to go by the books. The Universals should be fine and there's no harm using what you have on hand to get the bike running!

They are inexpensive and the ramps work great with friction shifters too.
The 6 speed variant could have the small cog biting into you chain-stay so re-spacing the axle at least would be needed. (Anymore, I just stick with the 5-spd FW's and avoid teh hassle for what little gain I get from a 6th cog. (I only use 3 of them anyway!)

Use a new or the one you have or an 8 speed Sachs Malliard they are great hubs...if friction
