Any info on this tandem?

I picked up this tandem last year for fairly cheap and was wondering if anyone knows anything about it that I don't. Came with Suntour roller cam brakes, Sachs-Huret New Success rear derailleur, 27 inch 48 spoke alloy rims, and some recently added low-end Shimano parts. The Campagnolo dropouts leads me to believe that the frame might be something decent.

What I know is that it was made by Mikado in Quebec during the mid 80s. An almost identical tandem appears to have been sold under the 'Poliquin' brand.

Old post but... that last photo is mine. Where'd you find it?

The brand was Poliquin but it had a small decal that said "By Mikado" on it somewhere, and there was a Mikado sticker on the handlebars. So basically Poliquin is a sub-brand of Mikado, part of the Procycle group of brands (Miele, Mikado, Velo-Sport, etc).

I don't know a tonne about the bike; I picked it up on Longueuil about 10 years ago and have since blasted and powder-coated it. The headset is of the "French Tandem" standard which is basically nonexistent. Did you do anything with yours?

Man, that thing is beautiful! Thread resurrection or no, I'm happy to see it!

Probably not "made" by Mikado, just imported from France in the raw and finished by them. Almost certainly a Follis or LeJeune. That fork crown is pretty distinctive.

I used to work at a shop that imported unpainted LeJeune tandems, finished them with our decals and sold them as our House Brand. They're not super fancy but they're actually pretty nice, with the oversized fork blades and steerer which made them better than most tandems you could get back then. Even Santanas came with a 1" (25.4 mm) steerer back then, so the 28 mm steerer on this bike is an important safety improvement over that. Of course nowadays all tandems have OS steerers and we forget that 1" was used on so many tandems in the bad old days.

Not recommended:

Mel Pinto Imports still has some headsets for the French 28 mm steerer I believe. I think MPI are wholesale only, so you might have to have your bike shop special-order it for you.

I have a 28 mm 531 steerer and a nice old Stronglight headset to match, that I've been hoarding since about 1980. What are the chances I'll build that tandem before I die? Slim I suspect, but hope springs eternal.
