About to go tubeless... one quick question

I'm making the switch to Tubeless on my Cannondale Trail 7 mountain bike. Before I waste tape and have to redo it, does the insert in the rim need to be removed before I tape it? I'm assuming it does since the piece isn't tight and can be rolled around the wheel, but just wanted to be sure. Thanks!

Yes, it needs to be removed. Also, be sure to clean the rim bed thoroughly, with denatured alcohol or similar. When you wrap the tape, stretch it as tight as you can.

Thanks! I've converted on another bike, but they were tubeless ready so I didn't have to worry about it.

No real need for a photo, we've all seen a rim strip.

Thanks for the help. I might try taking them to a gas station to use the compressor. My compressor at home did the trick last time, but these are bigger tires and I'm having trouble getting them to seat. Any tips outside the obvious?

on some stubborn tires I've had to install tubes to seat the tire beads. leave them inflated overnight, remove the tube then they seat easily tubeless.

Take out the valve cores to seat the tires. Removing the valve core allows more air volume to enter the tire quickly and seat the tire. I usually cover the valve stem with my finger and quickly insert the valve core into the stem to prevent too much air from escaping.

I've built up 2 wheelsets with Stans rims on mountain bikes and I have a tubless Swiss set on my road bike. I usually can get them to seat with a hand pump and sometimes even with the valve core installed.

As for your question.Yes, you need to take off the rim tape.

Isn't that only an option with a hand pump be since there's nothing to engage the nozzle on a compressor? Or am I missing something?

If your compressor has a standard air chuck(the same as you would use on a car tire) you just press the chuck onto the valve stem with the core removed.
