It seems like on frames without lugs, powder coating is a much better answer. It's much cheaper, goes on smooth, and is way, way more durable than paint. It's environmentally benign and that now matters to me. It's just much thicker than paint. (Even thicker than a CyclArt paint job, if you can believe it. ;-) ) So if you own a Peter Weigle with perfectly thinned lugs, it's not a good answer. For a tig-welded or even fillet-brazed frame, I don't really see a downside. Anyone know of one?

Nope, you pretty much nailed it. For a Schwinn Tempo, Centurion Ironman or similar mid level mass produced frame, powder coating is ideal, especially if you have a coater who does a lot of bike frames and pays attention. I've owned, ridden and sold many, many powdered frames and never felt ashamed of the finish work. But for a high quality, hand made frame with nice lugwork, wet paint is the better -and more expensive- choice.

That's a very good price, worth shipping a frame out to if you're in a high rent area like the SF Bay Area.

Yes, you'll have the stigma of low cost.

I'm paying Yellow Jersey $500 for strip and respray. Base charge for strip and respray of one color is $300. Another color is an extra $100. Clear coat is another $100. Dupont Imron. I'm hopeful the results are worth it. I'm a bit disappointed that the graphics I bought failed the melt test and have to go on top (but that's what Trek frames originally did and I bought Trek graphics with a UV coating)

I just picked up a De Rosa professional on eBay for 284.00 shipped. The seller stated that he had just spent 550.00 on the respray plus $100 for the decals. So in my experience, it is cheaper to buy an already restored frame than to hire it done. My rattle can 1973 professional that I painted last summer turned out nice, but nothing like the de rosa, and believe it or not, by the time I was finished I had more money in the Raleigh!!!

Estimates I've received from various and more re-known KOF have been in the $500 range, pre-stripped (or add another $100), single color + clear. Cost of decals vary. So far the best water slides I've see are from Gus Salmon. Super reasonable too, especially for all his time invested.

FYI, I'm a DIY

$300 to $500 USD plus cost of new decals, chrome re-plating and repairs/modifications.

1972 Gitane Super Corsa - $300 plus $45 for decals (normal price from this painter/builder would have been $500 for paint only).

I know each painter operates differently, and some decals are harder to source than others. That said, I'm curious, generally speaking: Is sourcing of original decals usually handled by the painter, or is the customer usually expected to supply the proper decals?

I think the answer is..it depends. Many pro painters who only do bicycles as a sideline don't have the info or sources and expect the owner to do that work. My bike is currently at Ed Litton's for paint. He's been painting bikes for so long that he has a zillion decals available. When I brought my bike in he pulled open a drawer in his shop and there were about five sets of Ron Cooper decals in various colors and styles sitting right there. He also had detailed knowledge regarding the years during which the different styles were used.

In the 50's I used 2 cans of Spray paint .. black primer + a transparent green so it came out black with a green patina.

I have a marinoni getting paint from giuseppe himself 225CAN two colors with decals, cheap and a pro job
You need to sweet talk him and it helps if you bring a Noni for paint
The guy is amazing, still building frames with lugs(1400$ CAN) your size your color

Scooper: Any chance you could snap a pic of the 'striping detail at the wheel end of the front fork? I can't see if the box 'stripes come together at a point as they do on the 'stays or if they stay squared off.

I recently got a quote from Yellow Jersey that matches what @ppg677 had done. $300 single color Dupont Imron respray.

I have previously had two frames stripped and powdercoated at a local shop for $100/frame, $25 fork. I was very pleased with the results, and I wouldn't hesitate to take more frames to them.

for those in central iowa(or wanting to ship), this place will mask and do a single powder color for $65. A clear coat is about $20 more.
I had stripped the frame. Not sure what they would charge for that.

it's a couple of brothers that run the company and use prismatic colors.

Raleigh SC respray

Last fall I had this 78 Raleigh Supercourse redone by Yellow Jersey, in Arlington WI. Frame was nos, but original paint was failing, tried cleaning it up, but not happy with the results. Respray $300, New Raleigh graphics $95, Gold accents on lugs and crown $25, Clearcoat $100. Quite pleased with the results. They also did a great job on my crashed Bianchi, which was a bit more expensive due to some extensive frame repair

Can't recall exact number but was either $70 or $75 (US) and included sand blasting frame and sealing threads before coat. .
Company was Reusch Woodworking and Restoration Elma, NY.

Very good job but a bit of a drive for me. Star Powder Coating Hamilton, Ontario quoted $120 (Can) for same services.

Pinstriping, second colors, masking off chromed lugs or stay and fork ends is onviously extra - more intricate work = higher cost. Not a big surprise. The job I currently have in with him involves rechroming (he farms that out) and repainting and redecalling - the best estimate going in was between $900 and $1,100 but could go higher.
Ed Litton painted my Peter Mooney 1984 with a bronze metal flake Imron. Almost perfect paint job. (There was a pinprick of a flaw inside a chainstay at the tire. Once built up and ridden, I could never find it again.) The paint has held up flawlessly since then save where it has been hit hard (and over 30+ years, several moves, a few crashes, etc. the paint has seen a lot. I won't say what I paid out of respect for Ed. Just say, he was just starting out and what I saw was a price never to be seen again. Bike is still gorgeous.
