Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thanks! You can't go wrong with that deal. A little more work, but the savings are worth it.

I need to lower the stem, tilt the bars down so they are parallel to the ground and I might need to move the seat back a bit. I hate the compact drops and don't understand the skewers. Through axle? What's the advantage? Supposedly will fit 28c tires.
Also got a new seat bag, frame pump that attaches to the water bottle bosses and new water bottle cages in fiery red (not pictured herein.)

Below is the old grey mare. Many years and miles of service.

I just noticed that I need to level the saddle. It's going to take awhile to dial this in.

The new bike is a 56 vs. a 54 so that makes it a little more difficult to adjust. If I focus on making it feel the same it might be easier. After 15 years and two months of riding that thing I can tell what seems out of place.

Purdy bike @DougRNS.

Those look like quick release hubs to me. Maybe DT Swiss skewers?

The shop didn't do a fit when they delivered the bike?

It has thru axles? With rim brakes? I didn't know that such a thing existed.

With disc brakes, the braking force is enough to tear the wheel out of dropouts (in theory, I don't know how much this happens in practice). Another supposed advantage of TAs is that it's a more rigid connection that QRs, so better lateral stiffness and cornering - not something that I'm able to detect, though, it's not like I'm pushing things to the edge on the regular.

A cursory fit. It is a large national retailer not a LBS. Not going to get rjones28 service there.

How do I lower the stem? I haven't had to do it in so long that I think it was the old style stem.

They just look different to me. more "modular" for lack of a better term.
I just ride 'em and that is about it so I am not up to speed with the new advancements. No real problems with the bikes I've had in the past.

Remember, I crawled out from under a rock after many years when I found this place in 2016.

Stem on the new bike works the same as the one on the old bike.

Loosen clamp bolts at steerer tube, loosen top cap bolt. Remove stem.
Move desired number of spacers from under the stem to over the stem.
Replace stem. Install top cap, tighten enough to pre-load headset bearings. (can be tricky for some)
Tighten clamp bolts evenly and to the indicated torque spec.

Easy peasy.

Oh, and be sure the stem is aligned with the front wheel. Otherwise, you'll end up riding in circles.

Smith Creek on the MD side, at the mouth of the Potomac. This is about where the Bay starts to get really nice, empty, and big.

Nice, but why a lefty and a righty? I bet there’s something really hep about bottle cages that I don’t know.

If I put the righty on the down tube and the lefty on the seat tube they both load to the right. That was my thought process. Plus they're sexy.

Ha! Being really bad with acronyms, didn’t know it had any other meaning(s).

on an unrelated note; I’m rally digging the Rapha core jacket you’re sporting. How do you find their sizing to be? Can I trust their sizing chart? The store near me doesn’t have them in stock, and I don’t want to buy two and having to ship one back since they don’t accept store returns of online purchases.

I did did try a brevet vest in the store, and even though the chart puts me at xl, I tried an L at the salesperson’s insistence and it fit better than the xl I tried afterwards, so I’m not sure how the sizing chart compares/relates to core jacket as well.

Sorry, as long as there’s free mechanical advice, is there a sure way of guaranteed alignment, or “eyeball and experience” is the name of the game?

Obviously, I’m asking for a friend.
