CastIron, those are LED lights. I prefer lights with a little more clout. LED headlights might be nice for emergency backup use. I have a penlight and a red blinky for backup. I just got a 50 watt MR16 halogen for my old NightSun.

So, I'll be waiting for a coupon to buy HID's then.

It actually doesn't look that bad compared to the vega.

Here's a typical HID in the same shot.

True dat.

But it's big and ugly and has an external battery pack and still manages to be fairly puny.

At least the Vega is puny with a small, self-contained package that likes to throw itself on the ground.

At $320 MSRP, the Triple Shot is close to double the cost of the Vega and more than twice the weight of the Vega and 1/2 the convenience of the Vega. At that price the Triple Shot ain't that far off the price of a decent HID, but the light output is WAY far off.

the Triple shot has lower running costs though- HID bulbs have to be changed much more often than LEDs and are horrendously expensive.

Who have you heard of who has had to change a HID bulb because they wore it out?

They can't be all THAT expensive, unless the company is ripping people off. You can buy a whole HID from TrailTech for $110, and as I understand it, all the bulbs are made by the same manufacturer.

The bulbs are, the reflectors are not. The main reason the Light & Motion HID beam pattern looks so much better than everyone else's HIDs is the proprietary L&M peened aluminum reflector. And because of that, you can't just buy a generic bulb and install it yourself, you have to send the light to L&M to have them change it to the tune of over a hundred bucks.

That being said, I find it pretty unlikely I will need to change the bulb during the time I own my L&M ARC HID.

I don't understand why a proprietary reflector would prevent someone from installing a generic bulb. Does it require special tools to disassemble?

I don't know either. Attempting to DIY will void your warranty though. I also don't know where you'd get a Solarc bulb cheap. Welch Allyn wholesales the bulbs to OEMs only as far as I know.

According to the Welch Allyn web site they will sell you a bulb. However, they recommend buying from the light supplier because some companies change the shape of the bulb housing. Thus, the bulb may not be generic.

Batteryspace.com sells spare bulbs for $75. I think that is as cheap as you are going to get for HID bulbs. Incidentally my HID setup cost me $220 which is much cheaper than the triple shot. With the hundred dollars I saved I could get another battery that would take my runtime over 10 hrs.

I think my HID bulb may wear out in the year 3067.

However I will wear out much sooner.

The L&M dual's proprietary reflector just fits the custom bulb they use. I'd have to bore it out to even use another bulb. And the closest generic bulb that I've found requires the hole in the back of the reflector to be bored out about 0.35mm but the pins don't fit the holes in the back of the connector so I'd have to bore those out too...

Are you just experimenting, or did you wear out a HID bulb and need to replace it?

because they don't want you buying their bulb and putting it in a cheaper light.
they also won't sell you extension wires if yorus is not long enough.
