Since this is the Bicycle Advocacy and Safety forum, I'm going to come right out with these highly controversial lessons from the incident:

1) If you're a cyclist, try not to get shot.

2) If you're riding support, don't get into an argument and shoot a cyclist.

This thread is going nowhere good.

This is the infamous strip on the Rickenbacker causeway where several cyclists have been run down and killed in the last few years, usually by drunk/high kids racing back to mommy and daddy's multi-million dollar condos early in the morning, after partying on Miami beach partying all night.

so, you're not a fan of "stand your ground" ? you'd rather not have the right to defend yourself ? how do you feel about castle doctrines ?

It's a shame that the dispute, whatever it was, elevated so quickly to deadly force. Nevertheless, it seems to be only peripherally related to cycling.

People with short tempers shouldn't carry guns.

A firearm isn't a tool to resolve a disagreement, it's a tool to defend your life with. Your pride is not worth more than someone else's life, so if you carry a gun, you owe it to society to turn the other cheek and walk away from a confrontation before it turns physical.

The motorcyclist is arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder and agg. assault.

Finally, some sanity from the police down here that many times wouldn't even charge in this situation because of the SYG law.

Of course. But you know, the gun advocates are going to claim that kind of restriction violates someone's rights under the 2nd Amendment. And guess what? Riding a bike is not a right under the US Constitution whereas carrying a gun is.

I'm as pro-gun as you can get (I'd love to see machine guns deregulated), and I'll be the first one to say that rights cannot exist without responsibility. So much personal responsibility has evaporated from average adult life in the USA, that many folks simply are not mentally or emotionally equipped to handle the responsible carrying and use of a firearm.

What General Geoff states is taught in concealed carry classes and in self defense firearm instruction in general. Stand your ground does not give one carte blanche to unholster and fire a firearm.

How many generations of a Cuban family would have to be born in Florida before you would consider them native Floridians?

In my estimation the major tri-country area I'd estimate that 1 in 4 were even born in the state. In fact, the Miami-Fort Laurderdale-Pompano Beach metro area has more immigrants than any other city in the U.S. according to the Daily Beast. Now try to stay on topic would you.

Just hang in public anyone that uses a gun in a felony. Hopefully the anti social types will get weeded out or learn they will get a neck tie party.

Isn't this the same road that had another high profile bicyclist death a few years ago? One where the spoiled rich kid ran over a bicyclist and went home to his parents condo hoping to avoid any responsibility? He finally did get convicted, and I think the attention helped justice be served there.

I'm sure many of us recall the days when people often didn't bother locking their doors at night. Now a great many people won't answer the front door without a pistol in their hands. Applications for carry permits are off the charts !
People have burglar alarms and cameras covering not only their houses, but their cars, yards, lawn mower sheds, etc. I used to hitch hike around the county without a problem, who wants to do that these days ? (or has any expectation of getting picked up by anything by a pervert or serial killer). I routinely hear people click their stupid car alarm, when just walking into a convenience store for a half a minute, and can see the car the whole time !! We are surrounded by high tech police and security, much of it we never see. Going through airport security is like a scene in a science fiction movie. Schools all over the country have metal detectors, armed guards, and monitors posted in the bathrooms to keep the kids from screwing in the bathroom stalls, LOL!!
There have always been parts of every city that are considered wise to avoid, especially after dark, but these days, you're taking your life in your hands !
"Home invasion" was a term that didn't exist a few decades ago, now everybody knows and fears them. Drug gangs virtually rule large areas of our major cities, and have memberships in the tens of thousands.
Do I need to go on? Because I can go on till midnight. I'm not saying the good ol' days were idyllic as Mayberry or Ozzie & harriet, but the fact is there has been a sea change in the moral fabric of this country, and citing some per capita statistic doesn't alter what nearly everyone routinely acknowledges.

(BTW, i wasn't calling you out when i quoted your post, I was just expanding on it).

Miami is not "Southern". You really don't understand. Its the "stand your ground" law and the stupid entitlement culture of Miami that is the cause.
Oye asere, if you are really are Cubano and if you live in Florida, you’d know that is not just Cubans who use the word maricon. Puerto Ricans, Colombians, Venezuelans, even Spaniards use the term maricon.

No, you don't. You didn't need to start in the first place. There are places online that welcome such inane political polemics, but this is not one of them.

I didn't start it, the thread had gone in that direction much earlier, with with numerous other posts, but fair enough, I'm out of it.

I don't say in my post that only Cubans say maricon. I'm telling the poster that this is not the deep south, as in Alabama, Georgia etc., that these guys are cubans because they are speaking spanish and one spanish word they use, which is easily recognizable is maricon. Why the hate? Why the doubt that I'm Cuban? Want to see my passport that says country of birth is Cuba?
