Bench top mat like the Park OM-2

Anyone use a mat like the om-2? I have a nice small workbench on wheels that i use a lot and want to put a mat like this on top but the Park one is over $30 for a 15x24 mat which is a bit insane. Any alternatives on there that you use?

That mat seems gimmicky.

My main bench is an old dresser with 2x6 boards screwed to the top. The top level of drawers were removed, so I can use that space to stash things off the bench top, or hang them above the bench, or I just put them on the bench top itself. One thing I have found handy is a 9" diameter Rubbermaid basin that is good for wrangling smaller parts; this can be further organized using one or two old cups from liquid laundry soap containers (the Tide ones are about 3" high x 3" diameter, great for nuts, bolts, etc.). The basin can get moved around and stuck on a shelf if I want the room on the bench.

I'm a working mechanic and I can kinda see the appeal--for a shop with any kinda volume that mat is pretty cheap if it offers any kind of improvement to effieiency, which it might for some mechanics. Keep in mind that for most of Park's products, the target market is commercial shops.

That said I've never seen one. Most working shops subscribe to a rag service. I'll place rags on my bench and place parts and tools with them--it's a good way to enforce discipline about how many tools you have on the bench, and keep track of parts (the rags keep things from rolling reasonably well). If you get oil on your bench it's easier to just be able to spray it down and wipe it, rather than a textured mat.

I use those $2 magnetic trays from HF tp hold small parts, A piece of leather on the bench top that I cover with blue shop towels to keep the leather clean, when the shop towels are dirty, they get remove and fresh layer put down.
