Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Today is a two-fer non-riding day in that it’s cold and windy and also, I have two specialists to see today:

1. Six-month retinal scan because of something due to the optic nerve opening. (Don’t ask me why)

2. New hearing aids day! Old ones we’re getting staticky and we’re obsolete.

For the last two days the radio in my garage has been extremely staticky and broken up, although still more or less comprehensible.

I've been fiddling with the antenna to no avail, only to realize that I had the frequency dialed ti 89.6 instead of 89.5

I suppose it depends on frequency, too. I get to ride 3 days per week, typically. Ideally, I'd like to be in the 45-65 mile range for each, that's a satisfying effort, but that's often not realistic for the reasons mentioned.

If I could ride every day? Woof. I bet I'd have a lot of shorter, maintenance rides (30-ish) and a longer ride (80+) each week or so - those are great to flush out the physical and emotional toxins of modern life.

Thanks! It's going to a framebuilder today for a couple more sets of bottle bosses, downtube shift bosses, and cantilever brake posts.

Very very excited.

Looks like you have an upper level Trek, but fairly old. Is it made of Columbus?

Oh, you'll be fine.

Unless it's hilly, then you're screwed.

What in the wide, wide world of sports?

https://philadelphiapenshow.com/

A pen show? Complete with a penmanship improvement seminar? Seriously? I am tempted to go just to check out the crowd. The Philly Tattoo Convention is also this weekend. Scary looking crowd for that one. So much to do this weekend.

Mercifully, the short route is supposed to be pretty flat. Well under 1k feet of elevation. There is a 100K that is actually a pretty big race and that route tends to have some really punchy, but short climbs. It's the Texas Chainring Massacre. There is a former DK 200 winner (which is weird because I actually worked with this guy at a bike shop back in 2012 or so) Mat Stephens and a whole lot of other big names that show up for this race. I think there are something like 300 registered for that distance. Panaracer sponsors the event and they have a team that will be well represented there, which Mat is actually on. My old shop Bicycles Plus also has a team that will have some representation there. There is also a 100 mile route that has some takers including Nick Legan. A few years back Lance Armstrong actually showed up and raced the 100k. Mat beat him to the line that year, which everyone was pretty proud of.

I'm rearranging my schedule this year, so I can fit in some longer weekend rides.

Yes. Full Columbus SL. The ride quality is head and shoulders above anything else I have.
Or have ever had.

Cool, easy peasy then. I'd still say that flattish gravel is still ~50% harder than paved, but once hills creep in to the equation, it's quite a bit tougher, 'specially for bigger guys. Having to sit and spin, because standing makes the rear tire break out, is torture for me.

I'd check it out, if I was in the city with time on my hands.

I'm very much in between "Dude, just take it easy and have fun" and "Just blow yourself up and see what happens." A realistic goal would be under 2.5 hours. Ambitious would be under 2 hours. The fast guys will easy average 20 mph over the 100k course.

The amount of force type work I'm doing is short, but super intense. 1:10 last night, with warm up and spin down. Example: Last night was 1 hour tempo with a 30" 53x12 seated sprint on the 3's. Start, 3'-6'-9' with the last at 57'. so the last 2.5 minutes was rest at tempo... Weights this morning, over/unders tonight. With this type of program, one can get on their bike and ride for a week at Z2, and finally get off the bike because you're tired of riding the bike, not because you're worn out. Weights and force do wonders for endurance.

I signed up for a Spring series -- long courses are about 40 miles. These will all be hilly. There are some long climbs out in the Finger Lakes area.

My ex told me about it. She's going to go on Saturday. He left her a collection of old pens. She's not interested in selling them but would like to know more about them.

I have a decent fountain pen that I use daily which cost about $90. I wouldn't go much higher than that.

I have a Waterman that likely cost a lot more than my daily driver, but it was a gift. It needs a new nib @ around $40. I just haven't gotten around to ordering one.
