The Epoca



Selle Italia unveiled their latest range of saddles and accessories at Eurobike earlier this year. The classic leather range, was created to offer enthusiasts vintage-style products but with the technological advancements Selle Italia are renowned for.

Using their original machinery (last used in 1897!) combined with modern techniques, Sella Italia’s leather range of saddles is designed to outperform England’s favourite leather saddle specialists.

The range is comprised of three models, the Mitica which is the trekking model, the Storico which is designed for racing, and the endurance model the Epoca. All three saddles use the same hand-made manufacturing process and are made from three separate layers of material as opposed to the normal method Brooks use, which is just one. The two layers of leather combined with one mesh layer means the saddles resists deformation and ensures longevity.

The dual-metal compression rivets are designed not too lose their shape or tear the leather when you tighten the cover. Something common in Brooks saddles, due to their hand-hammered copper rivets.

Accompanying the saddles are a range of accessories, produced from the the same high-quality leather to match the saddles. The Gloriosa saddle bag attaches to the metal tabs fitted discreetly to the underside each model of saddle. The grips for flat bar bikes are offered in either an ergonomic shape called the Epica, or standard shaped grips called Eterna. Leather road tape is also available and all tape and grips come with stylish cork bar ends. All Sella Italia products are offered in both black and honey.

The range will be available from the end of 2016

Overall very impressed with the product line. One thing though, they could have placed the embossed detail someplace else before they cut the Storica.

This one looks good, maybe except for the strangely truncated embossed crest.
I hope it does not go for prices matching how much the previous version now goes for......

The selle italia turbo is still one of my favorite saddles.

The embossings look uniformly ridiculous to me me, but the shapes I think my bum would like. Though I suppose they are made of relatively light guage leather like most of today's Brooks offerings and don't hold that nice broad, flat shape for long. Be fun to give them a try.

I've been staring at the pictures for a few minutes trying to figure out what that shape in the middle of the embossing is supposed to represent... a leather saddle pressing machine? A trophy depicting a booted foot descending from the sky? Anyone know what it really is?

The mesh between the two layers of leather could be a problem, if it makes it hard for some to break in the saddle.
Wasn't that the problem with other retro leather saddles, like the ones from Gyes?

My experience with a Gyes has been that the leather broke-in almost instantly, but it is not as comfortable on long rides (+30 miles) as my old Brooks and Ideale and my guess at this time is that it will never be.

They look like nicely fashioned saddles. But I take this statement with a grain of salt.

"Selle Italia says that, once pressed together, these three materials can better resist deformation and last longer than a single sheet of leather."

Not sure how the laminated construction will fare over time, but we'll find out.

At $118 for the mythical saddle, and $70 for the matching glorious bag, the prices are reasonable for euro-made leather.

Seems more appropriate for my Bottecchia build than does Brooks, so we'll see how they look up close.

Much prefer them to Brooks. Along with the Rolls, Regal, Concor all great Saddles. App. 1/3rd the weight and price of a Brooks. And they all fit me better.

Zombie thread revival time (yeah, yeah, I know, there are no zombie threads on C&V, only classic and vintage threads that get dusted off).

Does anyone have any long term user reports on those Selle Italia leather saddles (stylized as "Sella" per the original marketing a few years ago)?

I've put one of each in my Amazon cart, then moved it to "save for later," which sometimes triggers the algorithm to reduce the price. Kinda curious about the Storica, which seems to be a more traditional construction; and Mitic, which sounds like leather over a plastic shell, although they didn't elaborate on what they meant by a "mesh" layer laminated between leather.

Mostly curious because Brooks saddles are generally too wide for my narrow sit bones, and the Selle Anatomica doesn't seem to enable sliding around on the saddle -- I tend to shift forward and backward on the saddle to suit the terrain and my effort.

Picked up a couple of these just this past week, a mitica (magic) and an Epoca. On amazon the mitica was 64 bucks, so I ordered it, then saw the Epoca for 43! Couldn’t pass that up. So it is on the way. The Mitica is in hand, very nice workmanship and apparent quality, but as yet unridden. It always amazes me the wide range of asking prices you can get on Amazon, for the Mitica up to 200! You really have to dig around to find best price. Right after I bought the Epoca price went up to 110!

Does the Mitica feel like leather that will break in, or more like a leather covered plastic shell that won't change much with use? The maker's description is vague.
