Any riders with a Medtronic Azure XT SR MRI pacemaker?
Hi!
I had a Medtronic Azure XT SR MRI pacemaker implanted in December 2018 and am struggling to get back into the groove. Anyone else out there with this device? I have an AV block and am paced all the time. I only have one lead into the lower chamber.
My "Activities of daily living" setting is 70 - 120 bpm and "Exercise" setting is 156 bpm. However, when I bike the HR does not go above 120.
I am a 52 year old male, 5' 8" tall, 164 lbs...used to ride 50 miles every Saturday, run 6 - 8 miles 2 - 3 times a week. Everything is now at a standstill...

Have you resumed riding?
Heart rate is reasonable, and that you don't go above 120 when cycling says you're in great shape.
I have a Medtronic Activia SC Brain Pacemaker!
Xray to give an idea

Autonomic dysfunction, so it helps me with all sorts of stuff. I managed to go out Sunday fora 65-mile ride. (Max heart rate at 165 hill-climbing, Cardiologist, has given me the green light up to 170).
So talk with your Cardiologist, but exercise is a good thing.

Hello roundrocktom!
The reason why my HR does not go above 120 is because my pacemaker thinks I am in the "Activities of daily living" mode while cycling. Unfortunately, unless the accelerometer detects bumps it won't push the PM into exercise mode (and while cycling your upper body is quite still.)
I have started to ride but am capped by how fast I can ride at a max HR of 120 bpm (which means not fast at all.)

Coffeesnob,
How long are your rides? What sort of terrain? What speed can you sustain? Does your PM increase your heart rate correctly, naturally as you put in more effort?

That's because while you are cycling your pacemaker thinks that you are still in the "Activities of daily living" mode due to the absence of any upper body movement. We are all having the same problem. I have realized that the only way to get it past the "Activities of daily living" mode and into the "Exercise" mode is to go over ruts in the road and jump up and down...obviously not sustainable.
My ADL range is 70 - 130 bpm...so typically my HR does not go above 130 unless I start behaving like a monkey.
