STIs are hardly automatic transmissions at all you still need to know and understand cadence and the like. In fact STIs are less forgiving than DT Friction shifters. After racing with my friend (with friction shifts, he is more powerful than I am) in a local Crit, the ability for me to sprint with both hands on the hoods and shift by pulling the lever back slightly (SRAM Rival remember?) was enough for me to get the jump on him every single turn. Friction shifts are less finicky obviously and are more reliable but only more reliable than something that is fairly reliable already.

I've listed this as a double w/black 105. It looked much more aggressive than it was, but rode fine. I needed a bike for the NC mountains, and couldn't see converting a twitchier Ironman. This had to do. I've been gathering triple parts for a while, so after a 2-hour strip and swap, this is my triple.

Robbie, looks great. And I appreciate you attention to color coordinating accessories, i.e. pedals.

Lovely job Robbie. Very Sean Yates-y STI positioning too - good to see.

Here's mine! It's a 1987 Schwinn World Sport. I'm pretty attatched to the frame, otherwise it wouldn't be worth upgrading to this extent. I put some Serfas Tuono slicks on a set of Xero CXR-330's with a Shimano 9 spd cassette, powered by a SRAM double crankset on a GXP bb. Changed out the rear der. with a Shimano Deore XT 9 spd. To stop I got some Tectro long reach breaks, and some Cane Creek Crosstop levers. Swapped the Shimano down tube indexed shifters for some Shimano Tiagra shifters. It has Origin 8, Ergo flat top drop bars, quill to threadless adapter, and seat. Because I use it to commute to work every day, I added a set of Planet bike fenders decked out with a custom reflecto-tape job. I needed an extemely short stem, so I found this 40mm Hussefelt Truvative MTB stem. The only other thing I can think of is the SPD pedals, and the Delta rear rack to mount my Banjo Bros waterproof panniers.
I don't even want to think about how much I've spent on this bike, but I'd guess around $600. Like I said, I'm pretty fond of this frame. It was my first road bike, it fits me very well, and it's well built. I figure I can transfer everything over if I find a nicer frame.

I'm not sure how to post the pics, but here are the links.

Haha, it's class mates off the production line only wish they were so lucky.

That is one ace World Sport, there, Mr. E. tugrul hit it right on the dot, that thing is worthy of a production line. You could sell a ton of them for $1995.

Finally got a picture of a bike that came from a landfill, via a picker, to a friend of mine. He brought it to me, I made an offer, he kept it. He sharpened his bike maintenance skills getting it rideable, then sold it to another friend of mine for his daughter. She wanted it more feminine, and it had an aluminum fork that had to go.... A few spare parts lying around, some coordination to get my colors right, and this is "Rachel's Ride." Not sure of the year, Cannondale R2.8 700 Series. Says "Aluminum Racing" on the top tube. Of course, now I want one, too.

Fantastic build on that Schwinn, Mr Embrey. What a practical and fast build - bloody marvellous.

Nice job! I've upgraded (read as sank a lot of money into) an '86 Schwinn Prelude but it was worth every penny. Could never sell it for what I put into it, but I didn't build it to sell it!

No stupidity there, those old world sports are smooth riders. I'm in the process of converting my '88 to a commuter with fenders/rack. Original Shimano SIS system still works perfectly.

Robbie, always with the slick builds. Are your STI shifters usually angled that low?

My riders, yes, have the STI's low, as I fit to the drops, and ride the drops about 99% of the time: that other 1% would be on hills or just taking a break. I put them where I can shift on the fly, in the drops, so they tend to look low. On my DT-shifted bikes, the brake levers are in the same place, but look more natural, I think.

You'll notice I build bikes for others that have higher-mounted STI's. They are almost all hood riders, and I add a gel layer from about 1" up under the back of the hood rearward for a bit to make a nice soft grip area for them, and wrap them less tight there, too, for the comfort of the rider.

Nice to see that your getting some use out of the PDG. I'm sorry to hear that you were underwhelmed with the ride. I was too. I thought that I was just being picky because I like stiff frames with steep angles, but I think that maybe the tubing is too thin/light, making the bike feel mushy and dead. It kinda had the same problem as I think the Miyata 1000 has. I mean, you know how light that frame is! I think those frames would make for a cyclocross bike, though.

That tiger striped titanium cinelli grammo doesn't hurt either.
I have to ask. What does it tip the scales at?
