Can you identify this road bike?

Hi all, first post on here.. I dug our old racing / road bike out today.. It was brought and restored by my dad many years ago, though apart from knowing it is a raleigh, we have no idea what model it is or anything about it! If any of you would be able to shine some light on this bike and give any info on it I would be very grateful!

Thanks

has a heron headbadge, lugged steel - looks like a mid-80s Raleigh to me

from the fork rake (racing, not touring), I think it's an 86 or so Grand Prix
oh wait, not with center pulls - I think it's probably older
maybe a '79 Super Course that's been painted over?

ok, back again - top tube cable guides are not '79

I'm back to thinking it's 85/86 Grand Prix and somebody changed out the brakes to older center pulls - the rear brake hanger is aftermarket.

It's red. Real nice shape. And my size. Whohoo. Nice pics. I agree with bulldog on 80s Raleigh. What are your plans for the bike?

Can you tell the seatpost size? Any markings on the dropouts? Any serial number? (helps pin down the build location and the year)

I'm betting it's from Japan. Seeing a good photo of the Heron would clear that up.

Stamped steel dropouts without a derailleur hanger. The thick Raleigh Heron head tube badge indicates that it's probably a Raleigh USA model. Entry level Asian made bike from the early 80's that someone has thrown a mix of components on.

Does it fit you properly? With the seat that low, I'd guess that the frame was too big for whoever was riding it.

Update and answering some questions

Hi all, thanks you all of your input so far! I've asked my dad a few bits related to what has been said. He said it should be mostly if not all original to his knowledge. He resprayed it the red it is today, a Ford colour (he used to work for Ford... Haha) the seat post is just set to where it is as the bike has been in storage for 20+ years. The badge on the front says raleigh, Nottingham England... I will leave a photo link at the bottom of this post.

Also, my dad says he thought it was a fairly decent bike back in its day...

Thanks for the link! I'm pretty sure it must be an 80's Grand Prix built in Nottingham. Just out of interest - what sort of money do these fetch in good condition? was is a low end bike?

Don't worry, I'm not planning on selling it, the plan is to get it looked over, fixed up and ride it!

Cheers

no offense, I don't think it was built in Nottingham - more likely Canada or CT, but if s/n begins with N, it was built in Nottingham.

dollars, you're looking at $200 tops (and likely less because of no original decals), but you can't get a bike that good with that money elsewhere.

None taken haha I cant get to look at the bike again for a few days, but I'll have a look when I can.

Reason for jumping to the idea of it being a Nottingham one was simply because we live just a few miles from there and that it said Nottingham on the badge!

Thanks

never mind- almost certainly a Nottingham bike, then. Here, it would have been Raleigh USA

that likely also explains the brake difference. I bet it's a Grand Prix that came with Weinmann CPs in the home market.
After 1982, we're looking at Raleigh USA catalogs over here.
