In a hurry before...

Lutz, wool, top and bottom. Date to, hmmm, the shorts I'm guessing 1973, might have been '74. I was wearing them in a catalog photo. I forget if I was wearing the jersey in that shoot. In any case it's got some time and miles on it, but is OK. The shorts got worn through. I've had that repaired, but have a bit more work to do before getting another chamois sewn into them.

I have (had, around here can't be too certain) some more jerseys, plus I have a Raleigh warm-up jacket. It's probably Lutz, too, I'm not certain.

Does anyone remember the Mr. A brand of acrylic jerseys? They were made in Poland. I had a couple. The funniest thing was the tag. It said, "See reverse for care instructions. Machine wash warm. Tumble dry low." And this was all on the front of the tag.

I'm mostly proud of the fact that I bought this jersey in '83 and this picture was taken last year. 32 years and about 10,000 Krispy Kreme donuts later and I can still wear it. I guess averaging 10-12k miles a year and being tired and grumpy all the time has it's advantages.

also very nice!
Is the logo lettering made with embroidery? It almost looks like the letters are cut from a separate piece of material.

Steve, I've never seen a Raleigh jersey that I though would go with the Pro ... I had a wool Brooks jersey for a bit but it ended up being too small. Yes, on both jerseys the letters are some sort of embroidery.

True... a lot of Raleigh jerseys tended to be in their team colors of red/black/yellow. Not a great match for blue mink and silver. There were some Raleigh jerseys that were primarily white with red/black/yellow trim.. that might be more compatible. Here's one that I've got:

I've seen photos of old Carlton jerseys, in white with "lagoon blue" trim. That might be close enough to the blue mink to look good, and it would make the link to the Carlton heritage of the Pro model.

A search for "raleigh jersey" on Flickr pulls up a lot of unrelated stuff, but I did find a photo of Paul Sherwen from his race days, on a Raleigh, and wearing a Raleigh jersey that has only a red stripe and a blue stripe.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/23666168@N04/5961376981

Finding the old jerseys that are still in decent shape and would fit.... that's the hard part! I was fortunate to get my jersey (shown above) from a local friend.

The Brooks jersey seems like a good enough match, given the British connection between them, and Brooks might still be producing new vintage-style jerseys. Their website does show a jersey for sale, but it's not that interesting. I don't even see a Brooks logo, so that takes some of the fun out of it (IMHO).

That design was the jersey awarded to the British National Champions. It's not Raleigh specific. It's specific to Paul Sherwen. He won the championship in 1987 and retired at the end of the year.

well, that explains the colors! Congrats to Mr. Sherwen.. I didn't know he was so accomplished.

I'm a little surprised that he was using clips & straps in 1987. For some reason, I was thinking the transition to clipless happened earlier than that (with a few notable exceptions).

I have owned this one the longest. It was a gift from my wife on our first Christmas together. Have the shorts, too.

It's hard to say what the exact mix was but it was probably around 50/50. In 1987 there were still a lot of big teams and riders using toe clips and straps, including KAS (Kelly), Carrera (Roche), Hitachi (Criquelion), Panasonic (Anderson) and Gweiss-Bianchi (Argentin).

Not vintage, but a nice repro nonetheless. Noticed it on Doc's photo feed.

My 1972 Velo Club Tamalpais jersey is now in the Smithsonian collection along with "Breezer #1," the iconic first mountain bike built by Joe Breeze in 1977.

Here I am with Joe Breeze, Otis Guy and Victor Pritzker after we had ridden in a tandem race in 1974.

I found an eBay seller in Italy who has some cool vintage jerseys that he sells for (usually) good prices. I purchased a few from him that showed up quickly, in great condition. Only codicil would be that a few that he had described as wool blends were actually 100 percent poly knits. Here's a link to his jerseys...you'll have to look through the pages to find the older vintage stuff.

items in store on eBay!

Adding on the victories of Riis and Ullrich, Pinarellos would dominate the race for seven years straight. 1994 would be the last year the Tour de France was won on a steel bike, this time an Oria-tubed, TIG-welded machine badged as a Pinarello but rumored to have been made under contract by legendary Italian builder Dario Pegoretti. The bike is my 1993ish Pinarellos Gavia

I have the Banesto Jacket that goes with that Banesto Jersey :-)

Better late than never!

I collect (wool) cycling jerseys and am up to 170 at the moment ranging from the 50s until the late 90s. If anyone would be interested, I could post some of them..

Also: I'm always open for trades, so if you would see something that interests you..

I've been looking for an original jersey from the 70's-80's lately but havent found one yet that I like and is my size (S) and isnt steeply priced. I really like the ones you often see Eddie Merckx wearing for example. Some cool ones like that in this thread in fact.
