Best and Oldest are not necessarily the same. With that in mind...

My Cyclops is the best bicycle I have ever owned/built/ridden...

My oldest, at the moment, is my Legnano Gran Premio...

My best performing bike is not excessively old. It's not modern, but it performs like a very good modern bike.

1994ish Pinarello Gavia

My 1984ish Colnago Nuevo Mexico is my most collectable bike, it's in excellent original condition.

My fully restored 1971 Peugeot PX10 is my oldest bike.

I love my oldest bike--a 1960 Olmo gran sport--but it is not my "best" bike. Right now I'd probably say my 1993 Bridgestone RB-1 is my "best" bike. But check back with me next week, I might feel differently since I'm taking my 1993 Bridgestone XO-2 to ride BAM. There's a lot to be said for a comfy drop bar bike with plush tires on a multi-day trip.

My oldest bike is certainly not my best bike. It's my '64 Armstrong 3-speed, which is heavy, a little too small for me, and doesn't stop well. It looks the part, though.

Best in what way? I have bikes that are better for certain jobs...it's like asking if a screw driver is better than a hammer. I guess, overall, my favorite/best is:

Oldest (1949) is:

My (current) oldest is a 1946 Hobbs of Barbican Superbe. It's a very nice bike, but I wouldn't describe it as my "best." That particular honor varies on pretty much a daily "hmm-what-should-I-ride" basis.

My oldest is my 1974 Steyr Clubman.

It's also my worst bike by nearly any measure. I'm currently working on a 1973 Nishiki Olympic that when complete again may surpass the Clubman on both counts.

My best vintage bike is probably my 1984 Pinarello Gran Turismo.

Thanks for the memories -- as a starving UCLA grad student, I worked at a Peugeot/Nishiki dealership which also sold quite a few Steyr Clubmans (Clubmen?). Yes, the old Olympics are boat anchors, although the ones made just a few years later are pretty decent.

Oldest would be a 1948 Raleigh

Best, I'd have to say the Cyclops I had built for me in 89-90.

Not the oldest, that one is still in pieces. But it is my nicest ride. 1978 Motobecane Grand Jubile, Soon to be upgraded with a TA triple.

The oldest, 1973 Raleigh competition, before I repaired and refinished the frame. It should almost be done.

Well there's this:

And his brother:

Both Raleigh Record Aces, 1938

But then there's my Father's Paramount

Which, according to Richard Schwinn, might actually date to 1937.

And, at the other end:

1980 SBDU Team Pro.

There's more... but the request was for oldest and best...

My best bike is this almost NOS '93 Paramount PDG 2 I found on CL.

My oldest, in keeping in the spirt of the OP, is my '64 Schwinn Typhoon. It's kind of a hodge podge but it reminds me of my Typhoon I had as a kid in the '60s that was stolen.

My oldest and most used road bike - 1975 Fuji S-10S, build date Sept 1974 Bought new and ridden almost 50,000 miles.

Newest road bike - 1986 Miyata 710. Bought last December, but I've only ridden it maybe 20 miles since then - it is kept in my mother's garage in AZ for when I visit family there. Most would consider it to be my 'best' bike'. I still have to make certain changes to make it 'mine' and ride it more to see if I agree...

So I don't have a lot of age range

My MTBs are technically newer but all were garbage-picked. They're just 'beaters', although either the Schwinn Woodlands or the Mutt will become my primary crushed-stone pathway bike (to be used on GAP/C&O) and local rail-trails.
