Proteus Century

Hi folks,

I've inherited a vintage Proteus in great shape with most of its original components based on what I've gathered from the shop's catalog. How do I figure out what it's worth?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums but you'll be hard pressed to get any appraisals from this crowd without pictures to assess the level and condition.

Definitely a lower end bike. Type one would find at the thrift shop. Not worth more than 100.00 to be sure.

I don't think lower end is a good description. While it certainly isn't a high level bike, it isn't a lower end one as well. Forged dropouts, aluminum wheels, + Proteus made = means that it isn't low end. May even be Reynolds 531 as a lot Proteus were made with this. See this older thread on Proteus Century.

+1 The frame looks fairly nice neatly done lugs with cutouts and forged dropouts with mostly fairly decent alloy components. The shifter's, brake levers and likely bars and stem have been changed essentially downgraded to give it a more upright riding position. This gives it the look of a bike that is step or two below what it actually is. As presented I would it's worth $100-150 it needs some work. The bike has a lot of potential for a small road bike with the correct setup stem lowered to correct position it's way to high, seat raised centered on post, down tube or bar end Suntour powershifters to match the DR's and nice regular drop lever's basically putting the bike back the way it was originally. Then this one would present as a fairly nice mid level bike worth $200-300.

agree with zukahn; the frame is better than the parts.
