PSA- SOMA 65% 'inventory reduction'

https://www.somafabshop.com

Through Monday, code presidentsday24

But beware, I bought a pair of rims and a small bag on the last sale- over $100 so on checkout it said free shipping, but my CC got billed $40 (!?) for shipping and my several emails asking for an
explanation were never answered. Tempted to pick up another set of 650B Weymouth rims to have on hand, but I don't want to get burned on shipping again.

With temptation working hard to get the better of me, I emailed Soma to find out how to know what I'll be charged for shipping in advance. This time they responded and said to put in the order notes not to send the order until I had confirmed a shipping quote from them.

I really think they are understaffed.
which is the way of things now.
I would not freak out but be willing to not achieve free shipping especially for rim or frame sized boxes. Two or three sets of rims probably ship for the same as one set from the UPS perspective

I would order with that in mind.
AND
hoping they make it through this briar patch of a market, same with VO.

if either do not make it…
BAD

thanks for the notification of the sale.

Yeah, I was miffed that someone else from the same geographic region as me ordered a set of rims and were charged about 1/3 for shipping- it seemed pretty random. $40 seems rather steep for a pair of rims. But I'm going to go ahead and put in an order for another set and see what they come back with this time. I agree it would be a shame for Soma/Merry to go away- maybe even more of a shame for VO to go away, as IMEx they've been more 'customer friendly/responsive'.

Thank you OP for the PSA. I just purchased 2 of the Soma Weymouth 650b rims and 2 other items to reach the $100 free s/h, however, at checkout this warning appeared so it looks like the $15 shipping will apply since the rims are on sale AND the $10 per box for oversize boxes will apply so I may be charged another $25 on my order. So far the pending charge at my credit card account matches my check out amount from Soma which doesn't include any shipping or oversize box charge. If I'm charged an additional $25 it'll be OK since they did provide the warning.

Thank you for sharing.

If ordering from Canada, I suggest requesting that they use USPS. In the past they have used UPS, which charges a border brokerage fee of at least $50.

Not to mention that $31.50/rim is a heckuva deal.

Looks like a good deal on cranks. Some are square taper, single, double and triple, with 46 or 48 big rings. 49.00 or less. They are advertised as 10/11 speed so they may or may not work with, say an eight speed chain, I don't know.

Can you confirm that the sidewalls are indeed not machined?

thanks for the notification of the sale.
I am very concerned for both Soma and VO. I've posted PSA for Soma's previous sale as well. It's seemingly every 10-14 days now that they are having sales. Some of the discounts are considerable.

Fingers crossed here for these unique specialty stores. I try to support them when I'm able.

I missed one of the sales, right before another sale- and I'd ordered some tires and paid full price... I was kind of bummed- but reading this- I'm OK with buying them at "normal" price.

Has anyone actually used either of these rims? Do they hold up?

These look identical to some that I had with Velo Orange branding a few years ago. If they're the same, then I recall them building and holding up well.

Rims are almost always excluded from free shipping, still looks like they bumped it way up, did you dispute it with the credit card company?

They're pinned rims, so machining isn't obligatory like it is for welded rims.

It's like clockwork- a Soma sale is posted(so weekly posts) and an obligatory comment about how free shipping didn't apply is soon added. Soma doesn't hide that charges apply to oversized product.

I've used a couple of wheels built with the Weymouth rims. Zero complaints. Easy tire mounting, which is something that 650b rims seem to struggle with for some reason.

If you like Soma's stuff, its definitely worth signing up for their emails. Lots of good sales.
