Go for it! Reminds me of my old Stumpjumper. Wish I still had that bike, come to think of it.

Yeah, paid a bit more than I wanted, but it was cheaper than buying from On One...their shipping rate is too high for my taste. It is supposed to arrive next week...can't wait to get it built up.

The On One Midge drop bar arrived earlier than scheduled, yay!. I finally got the build completed on my 87 Schwinn Cimarron 18". The weight came in at exactly 24.0 lbs. It's been raining, so the first test ride will have to wait.

Simply a clean looking awesome machine! You let a little cold rain stop you from riding it?

Hehe. I had to post the build to the forums first It doesn't look like it from the photos, but it was starting to get dark. Hoping to take it out for ride tomorrow morning.

Very nice BigSung!

I expect your Cimarron will fly like the wind at 24 pounds.
Enjoy.

My faded red 23" Cimarron frame with broken rear seat stays is lanquishing in the garage awaiting a trip to the local frame builder to repair.

If I could build it to 24 pounds I would be more motivated.

Did you pic parts for it based on a lighter weight goal?
As I recall a few other Cimarron owners achieved builds in that weight range or even a pound or bit more lighter.

With my current project ,an aluminum frame mtb, which is the lightest frame out of about a dozen or so rigid mtb's I have experimented with,
will hopefully be my lightest mtb build to date. I was hoping for the 25 pounds range.

The new VO dirt drop stem would look awesome on that bike.

I had picked up a few bikes off CL since beginning of the year. It originally started as a project to build one bike that I can leave at my dad's place in Southern California so that I didn't have to take a bicycle down each time I went to see him. Looking through the CL around me and LA area, I found a few good deals in LA. I had my younger brother picked them up for me sight unseen. I figured I can pick the best one that fits me and resell the others. While visiting my dad, I saw an ad for beat up Cimarron, so I ended up picking that one as well even though the size was a bit too big for me.

While reading through the forums, I got bit by the drop bar conversion thread . And then a second project started to replace my current commuter with a drop bar that can possibly do a dual role of CX and commuter duties. I started to look for parts to start the conversion. I have decent MTB parts bin, especially since I had quite few donor bikes. But I had barely any road parts. Few weeks later, a CL ad came up for 18" Cimarron which is an ideal size for drop bar. I drove down 2 hours to pick it up...and that is the above bike.

I had 3 options on the frame/fork. The ETT on the 3 frames are roughly the same size. I weighed all three them. The weight of frame + fork + headset + bottom bracket for the 3 were as follows:
- Schwinn Cimarron 18" - 7.6 lbs
- 90 DB Apex 16.5" - 8.1 lbs
- 91 Specialized RockHopper Sport - 7.7 lbs
I was going to go with Cimarron even before weighing it, but this made it much easier choice.

My goal was to try to get it as light as possible with the parts that I had on hand. If you look at the components, they are not anything special. For example, the rear cassette is 7 speed 13-34T that weighs 1/4 lbs more than my 9 speed XT cassette. I used lighter 9 speed XT rear derailleur that I was saving for another project since the Deore DX rear derailleur has issues dealing with 34T, the max capability on that is 32T. However that being said, I did pay special attention to small details. I went with wheelset from 94 DB Apex over the DX wheelset as it weighed about 100g less. The Deore LX crankset was chosen over XT crankset as it weighed 30g less plus I like the touch of black, etc...

Once I start adding racks and fenders for commuter duties, all that is moot. For now, I am going to enjoy the CX.

I think 25 lbs is easily doable if you watch the weights on the wheelset, tires and tubes. Good luck.

For your reference, here's the parts list on the build:

I still have Salsa Cowchipper bar on backorder. I have heard good things on the Midge bars, so I am going to give that a try for now. Just riding around the block it feels good so far, but I will see how it feels after a few rides.

How's the brifter working out? Seems like you could save a little weight going to a rear bar-end shifter, and you would have the aesthetic advantage of matching brakes and shifters. Your current setup looks a little hillbilly, which is cool if it works for you. I like having bar-end shifters on my dirt drop since I spend most of the time riding in the drops.

I prefer brifters over bar ends, and I am used to it. I actually have the same setup on my Salsa Vaya, just in 9 speed vs 7 speed. You could say it is personal preference, and I am ok with aesthetics. I was willing to take the penalty of ~40g or so as well.

I have Midge bars on my MTB build and I really like them. I like the width of the flat section and I like the reduced drop and the angle of the drops.

This 1986 Stumpjumper has been shown in this thread before, last time I believe about a year ago. I bought the stripped down frame a few years ago, had it powder coated and added my preferred components. It may be the only Stumpjumper with down tube shifters! Had the fittings brazed on before powder coating. The fenders are Velo-Orange Aluminum 650B ones. Couldn't find any nice 26" fenders. Lately, I installed a right hand Suntour Command shifter. Attempted to get it to work with the Shimano rear deraileur and cassette but just couldn't get it to work reliably. Thinking that I might put the Suntour Command shifters on a Panasonic MC5500 frame with all Suntour drive components soon.

I was able to take out the bike for two test runs over the weekend, 14 miles of fireroads with steep climbs and 36 miles of road ride. The bike performed exceptionally well. The Midge bar and CX Pro tires handled the dirt and road really well, and I am really liking them.

Here are some photos from the dirt ride:

Climbing up the steep fireroads. Two of my buddies had to push their bikes up

Finishing up the ride and the view of the lake.

I just finished this yesterday. It's a 1993 Rockhopper frame. This has WTB Dirt drops, Cane Creek SC5 levers, and Dia-Compe shifters. Naturally I had to replace the stem also. I've only put a few miles on it but already I'm loving the handling - very precise, stable, and in-control. And I had forgotten how much I prefer friction shifting over indexed.

Yes. Nice frame, but I think you need a bigger one

That looks really nice.

Nice! I really like the matte green color - unusual, and very nice. Is it spray painted, or did you go with powder coat?

It's powder-coated. I originally intended a "British Racing Green" in standard gloss finish, but I when I saw this finish on a sample, I decided to try it. It's actually textured. I joke that it won't slip out of my hands if I have to carry it up the stairs in the rain. My only concern was that it would pick up dirt compared to a gloss finish, but that has not been the case and it actually hides normal ride grime better than a normal finish. And it's very tough. Only downside is that you can't put decals on, but that wasn't important to me. Here are some close-ups when I first got it back.
