Great American Rail Trail

Awesome news to me, hopefully not old news. Says 50% is already in place.

Press release math: 1,217 miles out of 4,000 miles = 50%.

I'm not saying it won't happen, but I'm not likely to live long enough to see it completed.

it's amazing to see how fast they can build a rail trail once they get over the nimby nonsense. Although that is a significant hurdle. There are 2 rail trails near me where they have the right of way, but they can't build until the farmers agree. And the farmers are reluctant.

But I think this probably should have been posted in touring

Well, to add some ultra content, isn't this roughly the route that Bike NonStop US ? 3400 miles from Portland, OR to Washington D.C. is using?

You can measure completion of a project in various ways, including % cost, % time and % materials.

In 2012 I was talking to the guy who was hugely responsible for the Biz Johnson trail (rails to trail) in Lassen County, California. There was a huge section of defunct railroad heading north out of that area that was mostly accessed already by the public, horses, ATVs and motos mostly. All the government folks were on board to extend the route out to the north. There were some ranchers and farmers who refused to allow the public to use the right of way the railroad had on their land, and a judge said the landowners had the legal right to say no to anyone on the old rail bed. Last I knew the proposed trail was stopped.

Their Bike NonStop proposed route does seem to prefer bike trails when available. For example, city trails within Cincinnati, the Little Miami Trail from Cincinnati, the GAP trail in PA, etc, with road routing when trails aren't nearby.

Great American Rail Trail
I suppose this is just inspirational. There's big gaps between trails. It's probably good to give it a name. The Ohio to Erie Trail has 280 of it's 326 miles as a paved, off road trail -- so giving it an identity is useful for pushing the completion of the remaining sections.

It will take quite a while probably for the emanate domain process to acquire the land then.
