1985 Miyata One Thousand .... Value for Insurance Purposes

Hi Guys .... I need your advice

I've bought a 1985 Miyata One Thousand touring bike in original mint condition. (It was hardly ridden, then was stored in the house since 1985)... it's a 50cm frame

I have cycle insurance for my Trek Emonda with Wiggle (Wiggle Elite package) and have asked them if I can add this Miyata onto my insurance

serial number is ND39368 (I think it's 1985)

It has the original 5 speed gearing/cranks etc aswell as the original Miyata Radial tyres (I have them listed on Ebay but I'm not sure if I want to sell them, so I may withdraw the advert) ... It also has the original Miyata fenders and pedals with Miyata toestraps

It came with the original saddle and I've now fitted Brooks Cambium C17 Carved saddle and have replaced the original Miyata Radial tyres with Contintal GP5000 clinchers (32's) and changed the pedals

wheels are 40 spoke Araya rims and hubs are Sansi Gyro Master (40h/40h)

The Miyata mudguards are a bit tight for the Conti 32's so I have bought set of Honjo H-47 Fluted Hammered Mudguards which my LBS will fit next week (It will allow me to use 38 wide tyres)

Wiggle has said that I can insure it for replacement value and your assistance with a value will be appreiated!

herewith some pics:

I've posted this on the Retrobike forum but not had any responses yet

That's in part because value depends heavily on local circumstances.

A bike like that, while very nice, can go for anywhere in between €100 to €300 here in the Netherlands.

You're in the UK right?

yes, I'm in the UK .... don't see these listed / advertised here, and I bought mine from a seller in Germany

What country fo you live in?
If in Canada, in the west coast I've seen them go anywhere between $400-$600. On the East Coast, about $300-$500 (both CAD).

In the U.S they are more sought after, but it's a market I am unfamiliar with.

You just bought it, right?
So best current value, willing seller to willing buyer, would be what you paid for it.

suppose that's true, but I think I paid a bit less than what it's worth, as I've been looking for years for one of these in my size and I don't see any listed .... from time to time, they do appear on Ebay USA but many of them are in poor condition and none in a 50cm frame

this was the response from my insurance company (they don't normally insure bikes as old as my Miyata):

Thank you your time over Live Chat earlier today. Our underwriters have reviewed your request to insure a 1980'2 Touring bike and has been approved. Although we are unable to advise you specifically on how much you should insure your bicycle for:If your bike was purchased second hand or is 3+ years old, in the event of an approved claim, your bike would be replaced on a like for like basis and therefore it would be important to consider what your bikes current market value would be, the price usually paid for a bicycle of the same age, type and condition as yours.Kind regards

Insurance replacement is what a new bike like that would cost, not what a used goes for.

thanks .... thats the sort of price I have in mind .... I will review the price after I get new wheels built with Son Deluxe dynamo hub and dynamo lights etc ....I'm also waiting for wider mudguards that I have bought (Honjo hammered), which will allow me to use 38 wide tyres with the mudguards

there is a similar Miyata 1000 in good condition on ebay USA at the moment with one bid and its standing on $599 with 5 days to go

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Miyata-10...4/333227055088

I will see what this one sells for and that will give me a good indication
