In Fort Worth, we have 95.9 The Ranch. You can find them online at 95.9 FM The Ranch - 95.9 The Ranch KFWR - The Sound Of Texas. There is also an app. The ACM awards were recently held in Fort Worth and were referred to by one of the DJs as "Almost Country Music." You will find a variety of music you won't hear on Pop Country. Most of the stuff you hear on the radio can be found live nearby. One of the songs currently in the rotation list is by the Randy Rodgers Band called "I don't have hits, I have standards" which pretty much sums up the musical style.

This isn't exactly genre pure but their combined redo of "Cherokee Maiden" made the radio station in (cough cough) San Diego so it's kinda "National City" country except way cooler. Merle Haggard on the vocals, fiddle and narration with the late Bob Wills band: The Texas Playboys.

Merle, btw, is a Bakersfield boy who did do time in San Quentin no less, for auto theft.....so there Johnny Cash. I believe that trumps your drug bust at customs for street creds if not smarts.

I'd imagine that the best way to get something illegal through customs would be to be a customs agent. I'll take a few rolled up across going that way but never anything except antibiotics or something coming back. They have dogs sniffing you up in the return line.

Somebody besides me has to post in this thread though so I'd just pick through it and find the keepers like I do with just about everything.

And I'll try not to post any Loudon Wainwright every chance I get.

Marty Robbins used to be a milkman back in the day when doctors and milkmen did house calls. He said it was the most rewarding job he ever had next to the music business.

So if you ever had to wonder about that old cliche: "Who did the milkman look like?".......I guess he looked like Marty Robbins.

Some glitches in this rare take of her first record but they're small and confined to the beginning.

Well the old tomcat he was feelin' mean
when he caught his tail in the sewing machine
He's a movin' on
He's a movin' on
Well he ripped a stitch when he hit the ditch
He's a movin' on

in the music library on my smartphone, the 'country' tag shows only the jimmie rodgers album, 'brakeman's blues.'

but, in other tags, i have uncle tupelo, son volt, the gourds, neil young, will oldham, gram parsons, bill callahan, and lambchop.

Jimmy Rogers? Yeah I can listen to the "Old Stuff".

Jimmy Rogers covered this one in 1928. Webb Pierce covered the version with Jimmy's lyrics in 1950. Except it left out this verse:

"I told the judge right to his face
We really didn't like this place"

And again in 1955. The song is usually credited: "traditional" IOW original artist unknown

Kids always liked Horton's songs. I was no different.

There was said to be an old fiddle reel with some words to that theme but I don't know if it influenced Horton's song since I've only read some of the words in a book and never have ever heard it.

"We shot their ears and shot their noses.
Shot the buttons off their coats as red as roses"

Sounds like a fit except maybe too graphic for '50s radio play.

Btw, Contrary to how the song has it Jackson's guys didn't take muskets with them. They used rifled firearms made in Pennsylvania and opened fire from behind cotton bales long before the British muskets were in range.

In another genre, I would say good bet that Andre Williams: "Cadillac Jack" influenced Jim Croce. But I couldn't prove it.
