CuttersRidge beat me to that Jean Shepard song.

Merle Kilgore was a Nashville songwriter who wrote this one in 1959. Clifton Clowers was actually his uncle. Couldn't sell it to George Jones or Johnny Horton. Neither wanted to do a "hills" song. Claude King picked it up and made a hit of it. Both Jones and Horton then covered it but too late. King's original was the moneymaker.

Not country to a purist but it's known to be played in the country

Lynn Anderson was from north Dakota not Appalachia but I always liked her cover of this one..

Well I've been touting Jerry Lee Lewis as doing the best covers of Hank Williams Sr, imo.

There are lots of renditions of these covers out there by him and all unique.

Hank Williams Sr - Jambalaya on the Bayou

Hank Williams Sr - Why Don´t You Love Me Like You Used To Do

Hank Williams Sr - Kaw-Liga

Hank Williams Sr - Move it on Over

Hank Williams Sr - H0nky Tonk Blues

Hank Williams Jr - I'm So Lonesome

Hank Williams Sr - Mind Your Own Business

Hank Williams Sr - H0nky Tonkin'

Hank Williams - My Bucket's Got A Hole In It

Well I find myself binging on this today, which I do now and then. So I guess I might as well share. A couple are reposts including one by another poster. This isn't even anywhere near all of them or even all my favorites, some of which I've already posted covers of as well. The guy was a prolific and versatile artist for someone who only lived to be 29.

RIP Bluegrass Pioneer Ralph Stanley. The genre owes to you.

I had my pick of original artist, Merle Travis's versions posted but they pulled it at YouTube. Lots of covers to choose from and I settled on this little known one.

And this swings out of the genre just a little. Johnny Gimble used to play fiddle for Bob Will's Texas Playboys. Charlie McCoy on the harmonica

Lots of good versions of this traditional. Steve Goodman's is another.

It's funny how little keys can trigger old memories. A newbie BF joiner posted his intro thread "Ben Here" and that reminded me of a old country comedy album my dad had at his shop by Ben Colder...aka Sheb Wooley. My dad repaired TV's, radios and record players back when you actually had electronics serviced. He kept a variety of albums around for test purposes and one of them had this song on it and I always remember the line "Ben Colder here" and the reply "Ain't been no colder here than any place else". FYI Sheb Wooley also recorded Purple People Eater and was an actor on TV and movies and is credited with the Wilhelm Scream

That's another takeoff of this old standard. I remember hearing it at my neighbor's.

A guy in my old boxing forum said that his mom cried upon hearing of the death of Conway Twitty.

Willie Nelson wrote the song and lots of people have covered it. This is the version that I remember as first to make a hit of it.

Asleep At The Wheel is doing a free concert in the park here on the 21st, and I managed to find a date for that who wants to learn to two step. Michael Martin Murphey will be doing a free street concert downtown in October too.

Missed the Ricky Skaggs concert in the park last month, though. He tends to play here every year, with Murphey, Jerry Jeff Walker and a couple others cycling through every few years.

Well if I'm going to post it in P&R I guess I'd better post it here.

And sometimes it might be wise to beat the man to it.
In which case he won't be "a standin' in your way as you're a walkin' out the door."
