Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Just got a Specialized Toupe

My LBS is pretty cool and lets you try out a saddle for a couple of weeks to see if you like it. If you don't, you can take it back and try something else; no questions asked. Anyways, I tried a Specialized Alias 155mm for a couple days and realized my sit bones are not as wide as I thought they were. So I went back to try a 143mm version of the Alias, but since they didn't have it in stock, the salesperson asked me if I wanted to try a Toupe instead in that size. So I got one, and went for a 25 mile ride tonight. The saddle fits me very nicely, and felt much more comfortable than the Alias. Anyways, I put my bike in the car after the ride, come back home and while taking the bike out, promptly dropped it on its side and put a tear on the cover. Looks like I will keeping this one whether I like or not... OK, rant over; just wanted to vent

The Toupe 143 is the most comfortable saddle I've ever ridden. I have two.

How much does Specialized get for that saddle? I'm not crazy about the stock one on my Roubaix.

I tried 4-5 different saddles before I got my Toupe, including some that cost quite a bit more. The Toupe is the best saddle I've ever used.

Every bike my wife and I own, including our cross and MTBs, have Toupes on them.... they simply are the most comfy saddle (for us) that we've found.

Just to keep it fair and balanced I just can't get used to mine (130mm). While the cut out does it's job, my sit bones are in pain after just a couple hours. Enough to where I'm thinking about it when I wasn't before. I'm coming off of an SLR and an Aspide prior to that.

the 130 fits my rump perfectly. I pedal close to the top tube (my thighs often rub the seatpost clamp collar) and none of the saddles I've tried is "perfect" like the toupe is.

+1 for the 143mm Toupe. Threw it on one night before a 150 miler and was comfortable. Has only gotten better since and I feel no discomfort whatsoever during long rides.

Is your LBS the Carrollwood Bicycle Emporium? I bought a carbon Aliante and took it back after it just didn't seem to fit right. They took it back and refunded with no questions.

Seems appropriate for a thread about a Toupe.

I just ret'd a Toupe 143 as it felt just as hard and edgy as it looks. I worked quite a bit getting it setup and tested on my rollers. I got it to where it felt as good as I could get it. On my first ride my sit bones were killing me. I felt as if I were sitting on two razor blades. If I moved around I could sometimes find one spot were it was almost tolerable but as soon as I moved a tiny bit, back came the pain. Saddles are very personal so I am going back to my Fizik Aliante, the best my butt has found so far.

Wanna trade an SLR for your Toupe? I ride both and find the 130mm Toupe infinitely more comfortable. the 143 Toupe was an A55-Hatchet.

I might! Let me try my old SLR again for reference. Can I pm you if I think the SLR would be the way to go?

Funny, it's the worst I've ever been on. I'm still not sure why.

Worse saddle I ever owned, and I know why. The Ti rails are not supportive enough and the saddle bottoms out easily, bruising the sit bone area. While they make widths for larger riders, they don't change the rails.

Specialized tried to get Quickstep to use this saddle, most riders refused, so the use Selle italias painted out all white with no logos.

$200 for a plastic saddle with fake CF is ridiculous.

The other problem is that the taper from front to back is horrible on the two widest sizes. I like the fact that they are trying to accommodate multiple asses, but the implementation is far from perfect.
