I'm "That guy"
I was out riding with Lisa, her first ride outdoors with the road bike for the season. It was a busy day on the roads and trails, first 70F day and SUPER early for Minneapolis, so I hadn't really pushed myself at all on this ride. I was feeling very strong as we approached one of the more challenging hills on our ride and I've been training on steep climbs with my fatbike through the winter. I told Lisa that I'd wait at the top and hit it full effort. As I'm flying up the climb, I pass another rider that is not holding his line well, so I announced "on your left". He shouts: C'MON! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?. I LOL'd shrugged and said: this is the fun stuff!
I feel a little bad blowing his doors off while he was clearly at the limit. But I also felt REALLY good about my winter training and being strong at the start of spring.
Other funny part, I was riding my commuter-bike and got my Strava PR. I'm gonna have to get one of the road bikes over there soon! Lisa, for her part, also got a PR for the first time on this hill for 2016, a clear indication that her Zwift training over the winter also paid off.

I've learned that most people hate being passed on a climb but are okay with you passing them on the flats. Maybe because they don't like getting passed when climbing at 100% effort but I took the OP's post a little differently, I think the guy was giving kudos to OP while admitting to himself he has some work ahead of him so it doesn't happen again.

I marvel at folks that blow my doors off. I was zipping along at a 19-20 pace this weekend and had a tri guy blast past me like I was sitting still. I sped up for a second just to see what kind of speed he was holding. He was above 24. I was impressed.

The way I've been "that guy" at times is when I see someone ahead of me on the flats out along the CT river here in MA, I'll work to catch up (usually quite gradually) then hang back where he won't be aware me until I recover from the effort. I then speed up to ride by all fast and relaxed with a friendly "hi there".
Yeah, I know...

I did 51 miles on Saturday, only saw one other cyclist, and he was going the other way so we couldn't have had a contest if we wanted. Well, I guess I could have done a U-turn and chased him down. Then I'd really be "that guy."

Mississippi River Road?
I was also out this weekend, riding with my 14-year-old son. He kicked my butt on the climbs, too. (Hidden Falls, Davern St., etc...)
He's become "that kid."

Nothing wrong with doing it on a hill, but if you do it on the flats, you better not let him catch you down the road.

Ha! This made me think about this past Saturday. In the middle of our 30 mile ride, our group encountered a long, fairly steep-ish climb. I was actually ahead of most of the group, but at about 3/4 of the way up, another rider (a woman, if that matters ) passes me at a pretty decent clip and exclaims, "This sucks".
I wanted to give some sort of retort...but nothing really came to mind at the time.
...I guess I should have said, "Yeah, for me more than you!"

I've told this story here before but I'll tell again: Last summer I'm doing a metric century with my then 12 year old son. That was his longest ride to date and we were around mile 40 going uphill. It was very hot and I could see that my son was struggling. A guy on a Cervelo passed us uphill like we were standing still. My son looked at me with that " Holy cr*p!" look. I turned to him and said " He's got a better bike" . We both laughed out loud and Up to this day we say the same thing every time we get passed by somebody else. And we both still HATE THAT GUY on the Cervelo!

I was on the Kona on Saturday, the Z85 was getting the BB rebuilt. Most have been a Hypno Toad impersonator!

Trust me, there's a reason I included that part of the story. Most days that I ride that hill, I'm roughly 20 miles into a ride and I've been running the engine hot. So getting there Saturday with fresh legs made a huge difference. I may be arrogant, but not diluted.
