Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

You could always Cinzano them. I mean that would get their attention.

Yeah, I don't get it. If you have enough money, why isn't it enough?

Do I have to teach you guys everything? There are two kinds of corn, field corn and sweet corn. Field corn is what corn syrup, corn meal, corn flour, etc. are made from. It is also what is fed to animals, especially to fatten cattle in feed lots.

Sweet corn is another name for table corn, the stuff that you commonly buy in the grocery, at farmer's markets, and canned and frozen and that people eat in its natural form.

I suppose you could use young field corn like sweet corn for eating without processing, but I doubt it would be as fine as true sweet corn. When you consider what a fuss most folks make about how good their local sweet corn is and how wonderful and sweet it tastes when just picked, I am surprised anyone would settle for young field corn, a poor substitute at best.

As for boiling the corn in sweetened water, I can't see how that would have much effect. Fresh sweet corn is so sweet that it wouldn't need the treatment, and field corn is so inferior for table use that I can't see how the sugar water would make much difference. Besides, if the sugar could get into the corn kernel through the heavy skin, the starch could get out thickening the boiling water into a paste, and it doesn't unless the kernels are cut open. So the sugar water for boiling corn seems like foolishness.

I'm back in town now. Eclipse was cool. There were no clouds. Like a hole in the sky that goes straight into nothingness.

I didn't take pictures. I (correctly) figured there'd be about 10000+ other photogs to do that for me.

Also, my back is messed up again (lumbar strain and sciatica), and I had to give my asst notice today. Life's crazy and all that.

Not going to attempt to get caught up here.

Where did you get the idea that white potatoes were higher in sugar than sweet potatoes? Sweets have up to 7 times the sugar of whites. Total carbs are higher in white potatoes, but not total sugars. Here is the sugar breakdown:

Potatoes Sweet potatoes

1 medium sized, raw* 1 average sized, raw**
Starch33.8 g 16.4 g
Sugars 1.3 g 5.4 g
Sucrose 277 mg 3276 mg
Glucose 532 mg 1248 mg
Fructose 490 mg 910 mg

Not a good table, I know, but the first data on each line is for white potatoes, the second for sweet potatoes.

It's so hard to find a decent faucet that I don't bother anymore. We don't use pressurized water; just gravity from a tank on the roof. The last two faucets I purchased, one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom, are 100% plastic, and are available locally for under $10 apiece. A simple matter of r and r, if and when they fail.

After today's ride, we had a family lunch date at "Smashburger." It was ok but overpriced IMO.

Sorry, I meant to say that sweet potatoes have a lower glycemic index.

I was impressed with Smashburger the first time and it has gone downhill ever since. I do not think we would make it a point to visit one again.
