First bike I every took off road was my early 1980's red Huffy 10 speed. Took me about another 10 years to realize how much better knobbies worked.
First MTB was a '95 Schwinn Moab I bought at the PX in Germany for $300. Worked pretty well...until I bent the top and down tubes in a crash. I was hooked by then, so I picked up my '95 Cannondale F700 for $1150 and rode it until I broke the frame last year. C'dale hooked me up with a warranty replacement, but I haven't built it up yet. Just sold my '98 C'dale SuperV 1000 to a guy at work. Been riding my 2006 Kona Dawg Deluxe.

Put a couple of years on this sucker...make it blue and there you go! I must have been the worst piece of s**t I have ever rode...but it was a blast! Finally fell apart on a 6ft to flat drop. Boy was that funny! Still have the frame in the garage some where.

i still use my first mountain bike (14th birthday present!) as my primary bike, a 99 GT Outpost, albeit with numerous upgrades. sucker can climb...or maybe because i've never ridden anything else for more than a mile or two i haven't figured out that it weighs more than a small car.
ps - just picked an 05 SID Team that's going on later this week

Univega Alpina 600. I sold it a couple of years ago because I was hard up for cash. I still regret it though. It had Rock Shox Quadras, I was lucky to get 1" of travel on that thing. It got me hooked way back in 1996. Right now I've got a cross bike and a single speed MTB.

Dang, you chillen are young. My first MTB was one of the first! A Ross Mt Whitney, circa 1985. Chrome. It was a sweet bike in it's time. I paid $399 for it as it was last year's model. Originally went for $599. That was a kick-arse bike. Here is a pic of someone elses:

Second bike was older than most here. 1991 GT Avalanche. Also one of the first bikes with suspension. Rock Shox Mag 20. Still have it, though replaced much of it.

Dang...you're an old fart!!! That's a sweet nostalgic 2-wheeler.
I was kinda thinkin' a similar thing when I started hearing about these peep's talking about their Kona's and Hardrocks. I started riding MTB in 1994 though, so I'm still a pup.

It had such a long wheelbase, there was enough space behind the seat tube to place a frame pump that would not interfere with the rear tire.

My first mountain bike was a used, 89 Nishiki Ariel that I picked up at a yard sale along with a 88 GF Hoo Koo E Koo for my son. The Nishiki was original when I bought it right down to the awful tires. I made a few changes, like adding a shock, new seat, tires and cleaning up that sucker. I've moved on to better MTBs, but I keep the Nishiki for riding gravel MUPs.... and because I can't bear to part with it.

1976 Murray, 10-speed.
Well, I rode it as a true Mtbike anyway...
I think I warped everthing on that bike,
but it was fun, and got me into the sport...

a 1993 Giant Attraction, I rode the living hell out of it, two untrue rims, and enough scratches and scrapes to go around, still rides good, just on the small side for me now.

My first mountain bike (kinda) was a Univega Rover 10. That was back in '85. Gave it to my sister and she ended up giving it to Goodwill. The Rover 10 would be considered more of a comfort bike vs. a mountain bike, but back then, I thought it was cool.
My first real mountain bike was a GT Karakoram. It was a '91 or '92. I think it was a '91 leftover that I bought in '92 or something. It was bright yellow fade to oragne with black splash paint all over. I rode that for miles and miles. I traded it in for another GT in '96.

A Trek 930 no suspension at all. Still have it although due to several injuries - back, ribs it no longer fits me at all. Relegated to trainer duty with a hideous adjustable stem set nearly straight up.

I ride my original Trek 830 as a commuter bike now. It's about 10 years old... all original components still, except tires.
And of course the addition of fenders and lights.
