Question Scraping Sound When Braking

Since around Christmas Eve, my bike has been making this weird scraping sound when I brake, and my bike brakes very suddenly, as if I pounded on the brakes every time I stop. I don't hear anything when I am peddling, only when I am braking. I have put some oil on the chain and it is still doing the same thing. I was wondering if anyone here could help me out before I take it to a shop?

All help is appreciated!

Have you looked at the pads? You may have picked up a small pebble.

Are these coaster brakes? If so, check your rear hub....

From your description of the symptoms, there's a good chance that the hub no longer contains sufficient grease. Fortunately, coaster hubs are pretty easy to work on. You might need to do a complete overhaul (see link below), or you might be able to get away with backing off the cone on one side and ladling in some dollops of thick grease.

If you get a chance post a picture of your rear hub and we'll be able to narrow down what the problem might be.

From the description, it sounds like a coaster brake. alyske is this a single speed bike and do you pedal backwards to activate the brakes? If so you have a coaster brake.

I bike shop can rebuild the coaster brake for you or you can follow the video and do it yourself.
