Let's focus on something positive. New Year's resolutions. It's about 3 weeks away. I have only 2 bike-related ones.


My New Years Bike Resolutions

1. Ride my bikes more than I spend time looking at bikes that I don't have and cannot ride
2. Fill my life, and everyone else's for that matter, with as many Huffys as possible, mainly against their wishes (and mine too)



What are your New Years Bike Resolutions?

This reads more like a scope of work than a resolution, but it is the plan for 2024: My C&V related goals are to finish the small queue of projects I have on hand, not to buy any more frames (with perhaps one exception of a current build doesn't work out for me) and to divest myself of all of those I plan on parting with... Which I can now happily count on one hand!

Brilliant, aside from the riding one which I finally managed to do today after several days of not, and No.1 as I have no pot or window.

Going to get a wheelset put together by Chris Robinson here in the Bay area, so, once that's done the road bike is complete...thus...

Ride for a whole year without buying upgrades, only wear and tear items like brake pads, bar tape, etc.

I want to finally get started on painting this one. I've had it since February and I thought I would get to it during the summer, but life events took priority. At least I got to ride it enough to know it will be worth the wait.

So far scheduled for 2024, Madison swap, Chicago swap, Milan swap, Greater Chicagoland Spring Classic, Classic Bikes Auburn, I'd like to host a shindig in Wisconsin, Bike the Barns. I'm open to other thoughts too.

-- Strip and start the repaint of the beater Bianchi over again.
-- Fill the damage in the left side chainstay of the '79 Raleigh Superbe, put it back together.
-- Build and flip enough homebrew e-bikes to get rid of the excess 36V electric bike batteries I have that are waiting to Tesla me to a crisp.
-- Finish the Headbadge site redesign (working on that now with some of the Paramount fellows).
-- Brazing: Get the DL-1 fork built, the Otero frame fixed, the Woodrup rear triangle done.
-- Get rid of the '55 Huffy Mainliner. Sick of it.
-- Do something (other than flip) the 32"-wheel Genesis cruiser I picked up for the novelty of it.
-- Put Dura-Ace and XTR on the kids BMW bicycle I found at Goodwill as a joke, then add M stripes because Dura-Ace and XTR.

2. Sell off excess components/frames/bikes and streamline;
3. Ride a ton more;
4. Complete projects effectively, including creative paint project giveaways/sellaways
5. Get rid of the portable, temporary storage unit
6. Disregard number one.

Like many of you , ride more . I was on my way to a better year this year when I broke my hip in late August , the 31st to be precise. I had my first real ride last Sunday . So I’m going to transfer (is this allowed?) this year’s resolution to next year’s . I did reduce my collection of bikes ….. by one bike , but hey , it’s a start….and end for now. So I guess just ride more , starting next year with a slight handicap, only gonna get better from here. So let’s ride our bikes! I think I’ll practice tomorrow if this darn Santa Ana wind will allow.

...please consider talking w/ your homeowner's insurance if you keep all those batteries somewhere in the residence/garage. I've heard that if a house fire can be traced back to an e-bike battery combusting, the fire damage is not covered, which could result in a devastating loss. At this point I've just heard the rumor, so I don't know myself. I don't know if this is all insurance companies, but would be absolutely worth a phone call to find out. In my mind it is a huge liability.

Finish my current project bikes -- no need to start any new ones. Build a new wheelset for 700Cx32-35mm tires for one of the Capos.

- Dive in building wheels. I have 2 sets of rims with hubs ready to go with aspirations for a few more sets.
- Start/finish my first full restoration.
- Finish the bikes that are 85% complete.
- Throw miscellaneous projects at gugie so he doesn’t get bored in retirement.

Finish the two remaining mountain bike projects, then convert the hybrid into a gravel bike and at the same time trying to finish all the road bikes projects. This means buying more dura ace 7800 spare parts, some 3TTT mutant ahead stem and bar, some easton or/and shimano dura ace seat post and another set of Cosmic Carbon or Zipp wheels.

• Finish any project. I have the ItalVega and ProTour frames with some parts on, and I just seem daunted by cabling and tape, chain and adjustments, etc. to finish them. Worse, my Ironman has been out of commission because I was going to use those wheels for the ItalVega and, and, ...
• Get to a "40+ mile normal" state earlier in the year. Several recent years I've gotten to where a 45mi/3500ft morning ride was OK, I wasn't wiped for the day but could be good for family activities in the afternoon. And those years I did 61, 63mi "big rides" for me in early fall. But this year, I was OK after several 35-37ish, but wiped out by a 43mi route several times. Then had school starting, a kid off to college, and got off the weekly rides. I need to ride more in the winter and ramp up earlier in the spring.

The intended project fell through because of scheduling issues to bend and braze the fork. The BMW just showed up last week, so it was way too late to the party.

However, it has been the butt of a bajillion jokes in the neighborhood, as I've been helping a neighbor with his K Jetronic R107 as of recent. Many German car jokes in season this December.

Huffy? What Huffy? I don't see a Huffy.

They're quality LG cells with excellent BMS systems, and this particular share bike has no recorded fires with these packs (outside of outright vandalism where a cell has been breached), but I'll sleep easier when I've acquired a fireproof safe to keep them in.
