Tubes not lasting on trainer

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tubes not lasting on trainer

I've been using a Conti Ultra tire when riding inside with a fluid trainer for the last couple of years. This morning the tube blew...and in the past I've needed to pump often because of a slow leak. Both the tire and rim look fine (no sharp edges, etc.). I've probably been through 3 tubes (same brand I use on the road with no issues).

Would a trainer-specific tire help with this? Is there a thicker tube that might help as well.

I've been riding indoor trainers of various types for years, usually in two hour segments and never ever had a tire/tube go.

But you mention slow leak...the post seems contradictory. Possibly the trainer wheel is too tight on the tire? A good fluid trainer will only need to to basically touch to the point of the tire not squealing when you are pedaling.

BTW...I use my worn out rear tires on an old wheel for the trainer. They are squared off and when I take them off you can see the cords inside. Still no flats.

I love it when people ask a question, then disappear.

sounds like the tire is damaging the tubes....have you meticulously revised your tire?

I guess your reply took care of his issues.

Actually, the trainer can wear down your tire to a thinness where even minimal trauma will cause a small cut and leak. My friend learned this the hard way after getting repeated flats on the roads that looked like pinch flats, except they happened 3-4x per ride. I inspected his tire, and there were no foreign objects or defects. Just thin - turns out the LBS has seen this before as well, and when the tire gets thinned out too much, even minimal trauma will cause a pinch flat. It was fixed the moment he swapped the tire to a new one. (This happened twice during his Ironman bike training)

Hmmm, Would a trainer-specific tire help with this?

It is a bike on a trainer, is it me or does this question seem to answer itself?
