Riding in Vegas

Have a little trip to Vegas next week and I am thinking about riding from strip (around Stratosphere to Red Rock and back... probably around 50-60 miles). Can someone give me tips on safe routes to get there out of strip? Would be close to Sahara but I am not sure how bike friendly that major street would be. (been there many times, drove around, have friends, etc but never rode their on cycle - so I know the way around just not on bicycle). Thank you!

I assume you are driving and the bike is in the back. I would skip the Las Vegas Strip and drive to Las Vegas Cyclery, park there and take off from there.

It may not be that longer distance but you may not need it. A few steps from Las Vegas Cyclery is the hotel "Element". Nice place to stay, no gaming. Leave bike in the room. Above average breakfast included.

Las Vegas Bike & Running Shop - Specialized, Santa Cruz and Cannondale Bicycle Rentals, Las Vegas Day Tours, Mountain Biking, Road Cycling and Hiking. Running and Scooter Shop.

If you're staying around the Strat, your best bet may be Sahara to Cimarron to Alta. Sahara is a major street, but the RTC has put in a dedicated bus / bike lane that should be out of traffic enough.

The RTC website has some decent info if you'd like to take a look at that LINK

There's a good cycle map of Las Vegas online. I haven't actually used it myself, but it's color coded and am using it to plan our future trip there in March.

I hope this isn't too off-topic but can someone recommend a reliable Las Vegas LBS with which you've had good experience packing and shipping a bike?

Thanks for the info.

I ended up passing on the bike. Couldn't quite trust the seller's listing.

We visited relatives there last year. If you have a car, I would recommend driving from the strip to the western edge of town and starting from there. There are a number of shopping centers on Charleston near Hwy 215 where you could park. There's also the Red Rock Casino. Otherwise, you're just riding from light to light in the midst of sprawl.

I'd also recommend going early. Like O'dark Thirty. And take a lot of water: two bottles on the bike and at least one extra in the jersey.

The road is pretty good once out of town. You can do a loop of the road in RRNCA https://www.strava.com/activities/613635564
Or an out and back on the highway https://www.strava.com/activities/614325138

Good pavement, lots of riders, and a surprising amount of elevation gain.
