Safety check

Saw this article this morning. Threw my kid's bike in the trunk of my car and brought it to the LBS for a safety check. They installed bar end caps, no charge.

A brief play:
Me; "that bike will fit your daughter but not your wife"
Husband Father: "what if we just raise the seat"
Me: "the seat is almost maxed out and will not work for your wife who needs the bike"
Husband Father: "I have been riding my bike for 30 years I think I know this"
Wife: "Maybe we should listen to that handsome dashing man"
Me: "Sir, I do this for a living, this is how I pay my bills, I study my product and I study fit and I don't take it lightly, I am a gear nerd and a bike addict"
My mechanic . (in the background semi quietly to himself) "DAMN HE JUST DROPPED THE BOMB ON HIM"
Husband Father: "uhhh....well I like the bike"
Me: "Ok then let's get her on the bike that fits and have her test ride it and see what she thinks"

End Scene

I may have padded the wife's lines a little bit with some words she may not have said but they were implied Oy vey I live bikes and work hard to learn what I can and be the best damn student I can be and this guy rides an old Gary Fisher (possibly pre-Trek) and thinks he is Mr. Black Belt with a belt he made himself out of a plastic table cloth he drew on with a black sharpie. Riding a bike will tell you that you ride a bike in some capacity and may or may not have picked up some knowledge here or there that might possibly have a small token of relevance. Aside from that I am unsure who he has talked with on fit or what he has read but a small bike with a almost maxed out seatpost for someone who is too tall for it DOESN'T FIT!

Sorry for the long venting session. I cannot talk to my friends they are all sick of stories like this or me rambling about bikes. Also go out and see BlacKkKlansmen, really excellent movie though seeing "Eric Forman" and "Steve Jobs" as David Duke was odd for me but he did a decent job of it.

I would like to state nice like that, but the only record I can refer to is: "Yesterday I had the 100th flight this year". And no, I am not a pilot or flight attendant or do anything similar for living.

Today I... successfully repaired a snakebite puncture on a 23mm tube. Tricky and frustrating, because they're too close together to make 2 patches easy, and too far apart for one patch to be adequate. Of course, only an idiot would keep taking a 70c x 23 onto gravel and get a puncture on every second ride, but hey ho.

Went swimming today for the first time in 6-9 months and it was rough. Form fell apart and I had to take a few breaks - how embarrassing! I did 1/4 mi. of freestyle (breathes every third stroke) with a breastroke + backstroke warmup and cooldown.

Swimming is a good vibe and a good time. I try to do it at least 1 once per month but I've been lazy about it. Now that it's the off season I have no excuse and I'll try to get back in the pool more.

Now I'm going to ride down to the velodrome (and back) for 30 minutes of soft pedaling, will hang out and chat for a bit as I think there's an intro class going on. After we'll grill some streaks and cook goat cheese polenta and green beans. ab workout this morning.

Racing track tomorrow night which may be the last one I do until next year.

Today I rode 98.9 miles solo on the road bike. I'm calling it a century.

5500 ft elevation. 6:13 ride time. 15.9 MPH.

Then I went to a steak house and had prime rib and fried pickles.

Good riding @TimothyH! I kept hearing a creaking noise on my Langster and got home checked my bottom bracket shell and a nice little crack...bye bye old Langster friend you got me fixed and now you must go. Hopefully though Specialized is still making them and will except my warranty claim and I can get a newer one and just swap parts. Looking at their dealer page they are not showing 2019 Langsters and zero stock in any 2018s so eeek.

Tonight I got lectured by some guy in a pickup truck who "didn't know anyone else who rode a bike at night." Apparently I couldn't be seen with a full reflective vest, 800 lumen headlight, and LED taillight? Seriously??

Was he in a old green or dark truck with a logo on the door? Older guy maybe with scruffy beard? Talked slow and was kind of polite, starts with "Mind if I ask you a question?" as a lead in for the lecture?

It was hard to tell the color of the truck, but I think it was gray. The guy was kind of polite, but you know what they're getting at.. Cars own the road :-p lol

if they are spending money on widening roads here, why not add some bike lanes?

Because the people want a perceived solution to traffic congestion, even if it doesn't actually work: https://www.wired.com/2014/06/wuwt-t...nduced-demand/

Have a good race tomorrow @Heathpack!

Shortly I'm going to do a Grizzly 100 training prep ride, 7+ hours on the MTB, just riding all day. There wont be as much climbing, but I'd like to ride for longer than I expect it to take to finish the event. I'm even piloting out the same breakfast I plan on having on race day, two hard boiled eggs, a big banana nut muffin and some instant coffee. I don't want to bother with cooking the morning of as I'll be camping.

The Grizzly 100 is a NUE MTB race of 100 km with 10,000+ feet of climbing, at elevation (Big Bear).

Today I flew out west, and had chills thinking about 9/11. Watching a special on the history channel now, feels like it just happened.

Today I postponed a longer ride and just took the FG on a grocery run because the weather forecast said thunderstorms. Not a drop of rain. Yesterday I went out for a ride on the road bike because we were supposed to stay dry until afternoon. Got rained on half an hour into the ride. Apparently my weather senses need calibrating.

you win some, you lose some I guess.

Tonight I'm racing track for the last time in 2018. Then on Thursday the GF and I are going to Southern Utah for 3 days of camping and hiking in Zion and Bryce.
