I did a 600k brevet over there out of Midland, almost all solo. Through Fort Stockton, Iraan. I think we overnighted back at Midland then day 2 did a smaller loop. Flat, desolate, dry. Just above freezing at sunrise, well over 100 by late afternoon. The sun bakes any exposed skin and the dry air sucks the water out through your pores. Listen to the lonesomeness in Marty Robbins' voice. No place for man or horse.

Scotts Bluff Nebraska is pretty cool and quite historic. It's impressive, the way it rises abruptly from the prairie. Quite a sight when you're driving west across the Great Plains.

My info is likely outdated since I rode there a lot t in high school and I'm turning 42 next week.
There was only one exit, head to the bluff just south of town. Find parking and ride. It was actually very good.
There might be a bunch of condo's there now. I haven't been there in a long time.

Everyone needs to experience an old 40 lb bike with steel rims so that they can appreciate the newer bikes.
I am still riding a 40 year old bike but I may up grade any day.

Not to weigh in too much on the silliest argument ever ("What is flat?"), but what the hell, why not.
To me, it really is how it's distributed, I don't think I'd even notice 70 feet per mile, especially if there was an equal descent. But if the 3000 feet were concentrated in a relatively small part of the route, then it would feel ljke I climbed somewhat.
My rides are always loops so the ascents and descents have to cancel each out mathematically. If it's a consistent 1-2% grade either way, that's not going to feel like significant climbing to me. I grew up in Minnesota, there were some good hills, but you had to deliberately ride to them.
