Once we go past "We all need to get lives" there is no redemption short of "We have dedication and persistence far beyond the bounds of all but the strongest .... or most disturbed."

There seemed to be a somewhat detailed debate about the relative flatness of the earth.

Total runout or surface profile would be a more appropriate feature control

He could have ridden that horse east 300 miles, and still been in west Texas. I thought it was further yet, as far as Ranger, but per boilermaker1 it's defined by the capstone escarpment. That puts it around Big Spring I suppose.

I did a 600k brevet over there out of Midland, almost all solo. Through Fort Stockton, Iraan. I think we overnighted back at Midland then day 2 did a smaller loop. Flat, desolate, dry. Just above freezing at sunrise, well over 100 by late afternoon. The sun bakes any exposed skin and the dry air sucks the water out through your pores. Listen to the lonesomeness in Marty Robbins' voice. No place for man or horse.

Scotts Bluff Nebraska is pretty cool and quite historic. It's impressive, the way it rises abruptly from the prairie. Quite a sight when you're driving west across the Great Plains.

But Pine Bluffs just south of there has real honest to goodness mountain biking.

My info is likely outdated since I rode there a lot t in high school and I'm turning 42 next week.

There was only one exit, head to the bluff just south of town. Find parking and ride. It was actually very good.

There might be a bunch of condo's there now. I haven't been there in a long time.

Everyone needs to experience an old 40 lb bike with steel rims so that they can appreciate the newer bikes.

I am still riding a 40 year old bike but I may up grade any day.

As a finish carpenter and licensed contractor, houses are structurally built much much MUCH better now, and finished much much worse. The craftsmanship on the finish work of an old house can be unfathomably good while the foundation is carelessly done.

Also, houses aren't really built with 1.5"x 3.5" lumber anymore.

To me, it really is how it's distributed, I don't think I'd even notice 70 feet per mile, especially if there was an equal descent. But if the 3000 feet were concentrated in a relatively small part of the route, then it would feel ljke I climbed somewhat.

My rides are always loops so the ascents and descents have to cancel each out mathematically. If it's a consistent 1-2% grade either way, that's not going to feel like significant climbing to me. I grew up in Minnesota, there were some good hills, but you had to deliberately ride to them.
"Flat" is what you're used to. Michigan is pretty flat, but not as flat as N. Indiana/Illinois, or Florida. To me, I don't think twice about 20-30 ft/mile but sure notice 40. If I lived somewhere there was actual mountains, 60-70 ft/mi might be the norm.

Dude, Quiet!!!

Way too soon.

How are we going to reach 20 pages if we fire off all our ammo in the first ten?
