Fuji Custom Cruiser not much of bike but in good shape after a hour or so work rides fine. Well likely do a bit more work make sure everything is good then pass it on to the local thrift store.

A Bertin get a reprieve, so crusty the lock nut on the skewer turned to dust trying to remove. The skewer was rusted frozen inside of the axel. Fortunately the bearings cup and cones are good. I'll break into the bb today.

I was also able to pick up the World frame, and some other mystery bike. The ? bike will be raided for parts for the World, mainly the wheels. The wheels are the correct for a World high flange Shimano on Araya 27".

Went to look at free CL oak near home and went further downhill to the dead end and found these under a No Dumping sign, so I guess this is a literal save. I grabbed the Giant, a fairly recent townie-style bike missing seatpost (30.9mm diameter) and seat, which I probably have. The Raleigh is a later Taiwan-sourced Grand Prix with 27" QR alloys and what looks like a Raleigh-branded Cyclone rear derailleur. Don't need it so will probably go back for it and donate it to the co-op. The Giant has a local shop sticker on it so I might be able to trace the owner just in case it was stolen.

Went back for the Raleigh, which turns out to be not a Grand Prix but a Taiwanese Gran Sport. Sad demotion of a once great model name with hi-ten tubing and none of the glamour of the earlier versions. This one has straight wheels and alloy components but the chain, cables and spokes are rusted and the chrome suffered the same fate. Off to the co-op with it. Rear derailleur is a Raleigh-branded V-GT, not a Cyclone.


I might hang onto the Giant as a house fleet bike. Looks nearly new. Anyone could fit this thing once I get a seat and post for it.

When I left for work this morning I had plans to stop this afternoon and look at a 1973 Gazelle Tour de L'Avenir. When I got to work I checked FB Marketplace to make sure it was still available, it was but the first bike in my feed showed a picture of a white top tube with "RACING U.S.A." It was a1985 Raleigh Competition, from the pictures it looked pretty good and it was priced very reasonably. It was a 23 inch, I normally ride a 25 but as I get older I find myself feeling more comfortable on a 23 than I used to. I sent the seller a message and told them if it was still available I would take it. They replied a couple hours later and said it was still there and they would hold it for me until I got off work. I let the Gazelle owner know I was calling it off. It's very dirty but under all the grime looks to be in very good condition. Included were the owner's manuals and a receipt from 1988. I don't know if it was a used buy in '88 or leftover inventory but cool to have with it just the same.

Went to the Bike Works co-op sale today and got in with the first group so I had a good look at the stock, I was hoping to find a Rock Hopper and saw two and a Stumpy but they were all either too small or had suspension forks (not what I want) BUT I did come home with an 85 Trek 420 exactly like one I sold last fall. Might clean it up and sell it or make a trainer bike for a buddy who needs one. I recall this being a smooth riding bike for a lower level Trek, It has a top tube ding but overall seems to be all there,

Nice find, but what was wrong with the Mafac brakes that made them unsafe? When properly set up they have more braking power than any sidepull brake I know of.

$10 got me all this, guy was moving and couldn't take it with. I missed the "good" stuff I guess. Everything in there is in decent shape or functional. The gumwall is a near new Avenir 27 X 1-1/4 and the wheel has a Deore LX hub, stainless spokes and a Matrix 26" rim. Brake tracks are scored up but it spins true. I was already pretty stoked and then I got home and discovered the Suntour barcons. There are 8 or 9 cassettes in those plastic bags, one lightly used chain and one new. Did I do OK?

That's a great haul, some great parts in that box. Bar cons, Sling shot stem & bars plus all the other goodies worth a lot more then $10.

It was originally the box with the bars, stems and cranks and the front rack for $5. He sent me a message about an hour before we were to meet and said for another 5 he'd throw in another box of stuff. I figured even if the other box was trash it was still a steal on the first box at $10. When I saw what the extras were I couldn't get the money out of my wallet and the parts loaded up fast enough LOL! The extra box is the one with the cassettes and bottle cages plus the wheel and tires and he threw another crankset and some other stuff in the first box that weren't in the pictures in his ad. There are a few orphans like a threadless stem with no cap and one odd grip, etc. but for $10 who cares? I already put one of the Shimano triple cranksets to good use this morning replacing the heavy steel generic set on the Genesis 29er MTB I'm going to use as my winter beater this year.

OT:grabbed a Panasonic MC-2610 Jet-Flo upright vacuum with boxed attachments and 17 new oem bags for $20 at a garage sale.
It had the original sales receipt from 1988 for $200.

Yeah I spotted that as I was unloading the car. I've been pretty busy and haven't done more than a cursory check on what all is there but there is some good stuff for sure. The Shimano SIS triple crankset got used this morning to replace the steel crankset on my new winter bike which is neither classic or vintage so will remain unnamed here but it was a perfect replacement as they had identical gearing and were very similar in appearance.

In my search for an old RockHopper I came across this and couldn't pass it up, my size, $50, bullmoose bars, thumbies, biplane fork and I have never had a Shogun pass through my hands before. Planning to clean the Prairie breaker I up, service the bearings and ride it as Clunker challenge bike #2 before I do anything else
