I like the idea of using white cages and brake calipers, but I would leave the chain rings silver.

Aren't most production white bottle cages powder coated? Seems like you could get those just about anywhere.

might be easiest to have a set of cages powdered by a local shop------frame/forks usually cost $100. I'd imagine if you can get in when someone else is having something done in white, it'd be pretty cheap.

I thought about that, might be an option to be sure of what I'm getting.

According to the tech helpline at Performance, these are powdercoated:

Yeah - I guess not too many people care.
Maybe he's lying, but he seemed very sure. The reason that I mentioned it is that I have handled a ton of metal bottle cages, and they seem to fall into three main categories - naked (alloy or steel), anodized aluminum, or (what seems to me) powder-coated. All the painted/powder-coated one's that I have on hand right now (about 15 or so) I assume are powder-coated because the finish is so thick and durable. They just look powder-coated to me. If they're not, then it must be pretty bulletproof paint.
Also - it would seem to me that powder-coating would be a more efficient and cost effective manufacturing process, no?

I think anodizing is a tougher finish...try getting ano off some aluminum parts sometime.
Powdercoating is obviously much tougher than paint, which is why I wanted to be sure.

Hey - today's your lucky day. Even says "powdercoated" right in the description:

+1. I'm of the opinion that would really complete the build. Also a white linen suit, with Panama hat with white ribbon. No need for trouser protectors - there isn't a single spot of dirt on that beauty.
Beautiful job by the way - a very elegant build. I've saved the picture so that when I next hear a comment that ends with "... but aren't they just old bikes afterall" this'll be one of the things I show them.
FWIW, personally I wouldn't not put white bottle cages on her. The alloy cages at the moment seem in balance with the alloy shifters and chain rings. Once the cages go white they will not only stand out more (personally I generally like cages to blend in as best they can), but they will be out of balance with the remainder of the alloy within the main triangle. Otherwise I agree with Zaphod - powdercoat the rings, cages AND shifters. Not sure about the pump, though something tells me I'd also take alloy over white, for the same reasons as above.
Just one opinion.
And again - dang, that's a nice looking bike.

khatfull, I know this is an old post, but I just pulled the same bike out of the garage and am looking to replace the hoods. Where did you find the white hood or what kind should I be looking for?

I switched to some modern BL-R400 levers and used NOS white Shimano 105 hoods. I don't even remember what the stock levers were.

I have a bottle cage (single braze on) that's white, but not PC or paint, but the kind of rubbery stuff they use on tool handles.

Keith, LOVE the bike. But for some reason, every time I see a picture of your bike and its crackle/lightning bolt finish, I hear Eddie Van Halen shredding off in the distance...
Possibly because it reminds me in some ways of his guitar.
(PS I just realized that album came out before I was born. Did not know that one.)
