Serious pain in perineal/groin and buttocks area

I'm getting this pain and discomfort whenever I ride and I'm only 20 years old!

I have a hybrid bike and I recently got a soft seat because of this issue. Turns out, the seat doesn't work and I'm still getting pain. I figured it has something to do with the type of underwear I am wearing or my saddle positioning.

The pain is mostly near my butt, just under my testicles and to the sides of the upper inner thigh near my penis. SORRY FOR THE INFORMATION!

I was thinking of getting a pair of padded briefs to wear under my pants. Would this help? Also, how should my saddle be positioned so I don't feel this pain?

Yes to cycling shorts, not (IMO) padded briefs. As far as other questions it's impossible to say what else you should do over this interweb. Is there a cycling group or bike shop near you? You really need to have some one with experience eyeball you on your bike to see if you're positioned on it close to "right" (whatever that term means...) There are medical reasons that even with "right positioning" will still provide pain. After exploring the mechanical/positioning aspects if the pain continues you should see medical help to cover those possibilities. Andy.

Soft seats will definitely make it worse. You want your support to come from your sit bones not the softer parts of your anatomy. Look for a saddle that is firm (not hard) and wide enough to support your sit bones. It takes a bit of time to toughen up your rear but it will get there is you ride regularly.

Did the soft seat help? I reckon not. My suspicion is that the original saddle caused problems not because it was too hard, but because it was not hard enough. The softer the saddle, the more it grips and twists your skin. A harder, more narrow saddle may not feel comfy just to sit on, but there's less contact with your skin and it lets you slide. Soft seats are only good for people who sit upright and don't ride enough to chafe. Yesterday I did an hour on a used bike I just bought because I wanted to give it a shakedown and I didn't bother changing the slightly puffy "Liberator" saddle. Tore me UP.

Sounds like a pinched nerve. I'd see a doctor and find out. You don't want something delightful like early-onset sciatica.

While it could be all sorts of things, I feel it's due in part to an ill-fitting saddle. I'd read this article:
The Four and a Half Rules of Road Saddles - Cervélo

and see if you're at least close on having a properly fitted saddle and if you're perched on it right. Seriously, it's the best article I've read on the subject.

It could be a lot of things, from "fit" to saddle type, as mentioned by others. Once you have the fit and saddle thing figured out consider the other options- you either have gas, or you're horny. At twenty, it may be hard o tell the difference.

Your anatomy has to get used to ridding a bike, the more time you put in the more comfortable it will be.

Get bike shorts, these will make riding much more comfortable.

+1 to seeing a doctor.

Have you been riding long? I'm 24 and, after not riding for 10 years, hopped on my Dad's bike and cycled about 6 miles on gravel (also on a hybrid bike). I'd never do that again! It hurt like blazes!

The next time I went out, I used sudocrem which helped a lot. Smear it wherever you feel is appropriate.

Thanks for all the replies. I will most likely get a pair of bike shorts and switch back to my stock hard bike seat and see what happens

You might post this in the over 50 forum. That has far more medical related dialog, than the mechanics forum.

Cycling specific briefs may help. A saddle with a cutout may help more. Echo the advice on seeing a DR.

A buddy of mine got a mountain bike to do easy trail/path riding. He did like 15 miles the first ride and had the "swamp thing" in his danger zone for like a week and a half afterwards. I suggested bike shorts, he laughed and said he was a man not a girl. He ended up getting bike shorts lol. I wore bike shorts from day one (even when I was 300 pounds the day of my first ride) so I never had to experience it

Nowadays, I am so seasoned that I wear tri shorts more than bike shorts so I have a smaller pad.

Aero Tech Designs is a great place to buy padded shorts, great prices, all made in USA with great quality... very comfortable stuff! Aside from that, actual Castelli apparel is nice too... just don't buy the cheap stuff because its not the same
