Cycling after hip replacement

I am 2 weeks post op on my right hip and itching to get back to cycling.

If you had the same surgery, can you share journey to get in the saddle? Did you change anything on your setup? I have a carbon flatbar road bike (Giant Comax Fastroad)

I’m at 240 lbs, and good strength in core and legs,

My wife had her hip replaced a few years ago and I know nothing changed on her set up because her primary bike mechanic would have known (me). She still has flexibility issues on that side, somewhat, and rotating her foot to unclip isn't as easy as it should be but for the most part, no issues. I don't recall how long she waited to go riding, but I do know she did a sprint triathlon the year after and ran and rode on that thing with no issues.

Once your doc says you're good to go, you're probably good to go.
@Beachgrad05 had hers done ... last year? She rides more than my wife ever did so I expect she'll have more relevant info for you.

My regular Wednesday climb is led by a chap with dual replacements. He's on a Tarmac, so decent drop, and the ride is 4,000' in 13 miles. I'm sure you can get there, and not in too long a time. I am pretty sure they got him back fast, but I'd go listen to your doc and PT and do what they say rather than a bunch of people in the Interwebz.

I had a left hip replacement in Nov. 2017. I was back commuting to work in mid January- six miles each way. I did not push it. I was a little paranoid at first- fearful of falling. I soon got over that and gradually got back to speed. I rode 500 miles on a trip last summer and 350 miles from the Ohio River to Lake Erie in late August. The hip never caused me any issue whatsoever. Now I am going to have my right hip replaced in Nov. of this year and am hoping for a similar positive experience. Good luck with your surgery. 2 weeks is early to be thinking of cycling. Be very patient, do the prescribed exercises and before you know you be back cycling.

Thanks, hopefully, I can have your luck. I’m just thinking of the time to get back on track. I am antsy these days since I can’t do much.

I had anterior approach vs posterior. That led to fewer restrictions on movement.

My setup is the same after a full left hip replacement.
I was out of commission for a few months because my replacement was the result of an accident. I spent two months in a hospital bed which stiffened me up pretty good. The joint that works the best though is my synthetic left hip.
My surgeon suggested getting on stationary bikes after I was home for only a month. Given you are looking at a replacement with all healthy bone you should be in pretty quick.

I ride a fair bit with somebody who rides a recumbent and has an aftermarket hip. Nothing changed in the setup on her bike, but she is always looking for something to lean against to help her on and off the bike, being a Clyde, I fit that description on a regular basis.

Followup question. Did you switch to flat pedals or stay with clipless?

I used my clips from the get go post op. I was careful on unclip but my speedplay pedals are relatively easy to unclip. I was on trainer only which limited my worry about using my clips. I didn't get to ride outside until late January, nearly 3 months post op

That was going to be my question to the OP. I am going in for THR most likely in Feb. 2019 (holding off for the holidays) and am hoping for anterior myself. Thanks for the great information!

From my understanding posterior approach is still more common. The doctor needs to know how to do anterior approach and they need a special table that looks like something people were tortured on. Thankfully I have no memory of being on the table.
