They'll understand some but it's complicated. Most English Canadians were/are taught Parisian French in school instead of Quebec French. Think Queen Elizabeth compared to Michael Caine. The Quebecois language has closer connections to some dialects found in rural France. Acadian French from the east coast varies wildly with a mash-up of dialects and languages (much of which migrated with the Acadian explulsion to Southern US). Manitoba has it's own Metis-French. Even Montreal has a of Haitian patois showing up. It's all grey (poupon)

Have a conversation with a fisherman from the outports of Newfoundland. Yes it's English, no you won't understand half of it.

That is true, but the reverse is not. My wife is French Canadian, and a fluent French speaker, and when in France, had no difficulty communicating.

Anyone try Viscount? Vihs-count. Vy-kint/count. Viskint. I pronounce it as Vy-kint, but I usually say Vihs-count just because I'd rather get a "oh yeeaaahh I know what you're talking about" (they don't) than a lengthy argument about why I shouldn't just spring for a newer bike. I've only had one LBS worker correct me and knew about the brand.

Wow...love this story. I'm one of the very few that have Mafac brakes AND live in Fuquay Varina, NC...at least for now. The locals here would say..."I don't give a tinkers dam how you pronounce either one... just git on the sidewalk where you belong!".
