Novara - Mazama: Discontinued & No Longer Available

I'm glad I got mine right before this happened. I wonder why they did this?

Likely they ran out of 2016 models. If you look at the Novara Randonee page, you will see it available only in XXL. At year-end prices.

Yeah. Where does it say the model was discontinued?

Hopefully its just that the '16 models have been sold online. The bike is fantastic and really needs to continue as its right up REI's alley for image.

You can still buy Mazama's in the store- my local store has 1 right now sitting on the rack.

If they actually cancelled the Mazama, that is a shame. I would have bought one a month ago in the XL size since the stack height is so high, but the overall weight allowance is only 250# and I would exceed that any time I loaded it up with equipment for 2-3 day rides.

Hopefully the bike returns with a '17 model. Really, its spec list is fantastic. TRP levers? Deore drivetrain and hubs? Clement MSO 40s? ...just a great spec list, even for a bike $300 more.
...now if they can just bump up the weight limit...

REI buys a certain number of bikes in the touring model every year, and when they're sold, they're out until next February. As indyfab noted, the page just says not available, not discontinued. Call stores within a day's drive if you really want one badly, or wait until next year.

Pretty bike. I always slobber at the one on the rack at my local REI.

I have to be careful to give those a wide berth while walking through REI. One of the few new bikes I actually envy!

In good news, if any from this year are still available in March or so, when they do their big clearance closeout sales, you can get one heck of a deal!

The March sale is not a year-end sale. It's member/coupon sale. I got my 2016 Randonee in 3/16.

The Mazama is indeed a nice bike. I wanted a drop bar bike so I went for (the slightly more expensive) Randonee, as I need my arms rotated the way I ride on the hoods.

I walked out of there with about $100 worth of clearance gear marked a lot extra off, and I'm not a member. Almost pulled to trigger on a Scott road bike marked down from $1200 to about $450.

I used to work at REI. All that that means is that it's currently out of stock not discontinued. Since it's a bike, they rarely ship between stores so they won't show the option to see which stores have one in stock. The Mazama has been well received but it's still sort of a niche bike so their production numbers aren't very high. The high demand however, coupled with the great reviews, means that they'd be foolish to not order more for the next model year. If you're really hurting for one you can go into your local REI and ask them to see if they can track one down for you at another store. You'll have to put the money down first and pay for the bike shipping, but they'll get it to you if there is still one available in your size. They'd rather sell it to a customer that really wants it in good faith that the customer will appreciate the gesture and come back for other gear needs since they've been served well. It just good customer service.

That's a different sale... It took place in March as well, a week or two before the coupon sale. I didn't find anything bike related that I wanted, but the store was mobbed.

The store nearest me didn't have the Randonee XL that fits me, so they looked it up, found it at a nearby store and offered me the option to bring it for me, but I chose to drive there and buy it there.

Not to get off topic, but I have to give a shout out to the Missoula REI. Twice over the last three years I have shipped my LHT out there from Philly for reassembly and tuning before the starts of self-contained loop tours. Making arrangements took one phone call each time. The bike was ready upon my arrival as promised, and the store held onto my bike box and the that I used to fly out with my gear. During pickup, I made arrangements for boxing after the tour. Those dates had to be honored because I was arranging for the shipping through bikeflights.com and thus had to specify pickup dates for FedEx. Everything went smoothly both times. The first time the store even offered to let me use one of their repair stands to attach my racks. The second time the store called me and advised me that my chain needed replacing, which I thought was the case. They also thought I might need a new cassette, but they ultimately decided I didn't. That's attention to detail. And the price was downright cheap. $40 for reassembly and tuning. $40 for boxing after the tour. At a LBS in Philly, that will run you about $75 for each service. And they got extra business since I needed stove fuel, bug spray and a new bowl since he one I brought was cracked in transit.

For those of you who can't get one, I'm sorry they ran out. I bought mine during their Anniversary Sale in May, and I love it. It's heavier and slower than my other bike, but a whole lot more comfortable.

Mine has the dreaded front brake caliper rubbing against the spokes issue I've read about elsewhere, so back it goes. Apparently it's a design issue. I'm giving the Safari a try now.

This is really surprising! Wow! I wonder if they decided to do another production run to blow out some left over frames or something?

No, I returned the Mazama for the Safari. There is an issue that some have reported and also happened with mine, where the front wheel spokes come into contact with the brake-caliper. I had already been dealing with assembly issues and other screw-ups from REI at that time, and was just tired of having issues, so I returned it and gave the Safari a try instead.

It turns out for the type of riding that I do, I like the Safari much better. As a side note I couldn't stand the bars on the Mazama. I just don't like drops. On the other hand the trekking bars on the Safari are fantastic. The Mazama is definitely I noticeably lighter and quicker bike, more built for paved road use, whereas the Safari has more of an off-road geometry and build to it. It really has the proverbial "built like a tank" thing going on, and pretty much feels like it, and I love it! lol

I love my Mazama, and would buy it again in a heartbeat. Bought it in February 2016, rode it fully-loaded 4,558 miles on the TransAmerica Trail with no issues, and now have 29x1.9in tires on it. It´s great in pretty much any configuration I can think of, besides speedy road bike. I´m hoping to take it on the Sierra Cascades route this coming summer, if all pans out.
