Finding right tool to remove old Suntour BB

I have an old bike I’m trying to get running and it has a Suntour bottom bracket. I’ve tried to upload a picture of it but since I’m a new member it appears I’m not able to. Does anyone have a suggestion for finding the needed tool?

Post a description, and then a bunch of followup notes too.

I don't know about a Suntour BB but I would be surprised if a Sugino BB tool would not work.

Assuming you mean the SunTour cartridge bottom bracket, this is the tool. They aren't common but they do turn up on occasion on eBay. An established bike shop or co-op might also have one.

I bought one on eBay for $17 a few months ago. There were a few at $35.

It seems there's never any around, then there's like 20 of them.

Do you NEED to remove it? In other words, are you changing the crankset or are the bearings shot? There's no real maintenance you can do on it- if it's fine- it's fine. Just leave it.

If the cups aren't stuck, an adjustable pin spanner, used carefully, works just fine.

I would think that if the pin spanner could apply some tightening torque while the lockring was being tightened, that the cup will rotate along with the lockring, thus securing the cups as tightly as possible against the cartridge.

I use the same method while arriving at my final adjustment of the adjustable cup on a cup/cone bb, since it settles the treads more securely in the typically-contaminated threads in the shell.

In the case of these Suntour bb's, which I have used, I would want the cups to be quite tight against the cartridge.

I remember these bottom brackets, along with the long-cage version of the Superbe rear derailer, being a couple of parts found on Cannondale's best touring bike but almost nowhere else.

I had an extra one of these tools, but modified it for use on the bulky-looking Suntour cartridge bearing hubs with the external lugs/splines.

I used an adjustable pin spanner for years on one of these, which worked fine.. I ended up getting the Suntour TA230 tool, when I saw one for like 10 bucks on eBay and just because. The discontinued yellow Park pin spanner also works on these.

Thanks for all the responses! JohnDThompson, the tool you suggest looks like the one to remove the lockring, but maybe not the bottom bracket itself. See the attached image that shows the BB with the lockring removed. Is a different tool required to take the next step?

John showed the correct tool, the Suntour TA230 tool. The left side in his picture slots inside the bottom bracket cup and is used to turn it.

Yes- you only need this tool-

the 3 "teeth" on the left side of the wrench fit into any of the inside notches that are on the BB cup.

Let me know if you need a pic.
