Decal aside I think so, as long as it fits. Are these wheels new? The don't seem to have any wear on them.

Those are the original wheels - Matrix rims, galvanized spokes, and Helicomatic hubs. Not the right decal for an '84, and not the right location for an earlier model. I wonder if the paints okay under it.

I wouldn't touch it with a rear helicomatic hub. Hate 'em. Not worth messin' with.
But, let's say you really like the bike and want it anyway. Ride it before you buy it and put the rear cluster through its paces. Make sure not a single rear cog skips under power. If it seems to work, you might be in good shape for a while. You can always replace the hub(s) or whole wheelset later.

Well, not exactly a newbie here, but I have to say, after having a few bikes with Helicomatics, I would rather not pay for the wheels in this case. The rest of the bike - okay. So, 200, I offered the guy. No deal. So how 'bout meeting in the middle - 225? Nope, he won't budge. Plus, he had this same bike up for sale last summer, I think for 275. I offered him 225 then as well. It didn't sell. And its 75 miles one way from Baton Rouge.

Yep, I think so. When it popped back up for sale again, I thought he'd consider a reasonable offer. Actually, I'm kind of surprised someone without the aversion to Helicos as I do would have bought it by now.

IF the paint is original and in good shape, I think it is a pretty decent deals. On offers, in person, in cash. But 70 miles one way to have that conversation, I'm not doing it unless I happen to be going that way for another purpose.
As far as Helicomatic, not a fan either, but they work, for a while anyway. Assuming the cassette is in good shape, if/when you swap out the wheels, the Helicomatic stuff has value. Note to self: dig through my wheels and move the helicomatics!
Considering the condition of the rims, I would expect the hub and cassette to be in good condition, but no guarantees of course!

I'm with you, for a Trek 520 1984? That's the only year it had the traditional seat lug and the 45.5cm seatstays. I would not sell mine for 250.00 and it's in a lot rougher shape! Also I'm in Chicago and it's a biking city too.

Agree with others who have said that the Helicomatic rear hub may be ok for use as-is since the wheels look to be in VGC - possibly not many miles.
One other possibility for the rear wheel is to find a Maillard hub to substitute for the Helicomatic. Some Maillard hubs have identical housings to the Helicomatic so the existing spokes, nipples, and rim could be re-used to build a new wheel. I did this with the Helicomatic hub on my Trek 620.
$275 is a good price for that bike if it fits you - and assuming it is a 520 - looks like a 520 to me and its easy enough to check the serial # to verify.

The seller should knock $50 off the price to cover replacing the decal. Aside from being in the wrong location it’s the wrong decal. If you were to replace the wheels, might as well consider 700c. This might or might not require longer reach brakes, but you could fit a little wider tire.
