I bought my next five year supply of wool socks yesterday, and promptly rode through cold rain on a day when none was predicted. Twice I rode through cold rain and my feet remained warm, if not dry. I find myself marvelling that I haven't gotten sick, as wet and cold as I've been on this trip.

Speaking of cadence, another cyclist expressed interest in a new, larger crankset to avoid spinning out on a 50/11 combo on descents at ~35mph. Looking at gearing calcs, that works out to 100rpm. It just baffles my mind that someone a) considers that "spinning out" and b) that their first inclination is to change their equipment rather than doing a smidge of work to be comfortable at a cadence that's not terribly unusual during a typical ride.

Throw the stick!!!!
I have never actually used a cadence device. I think my "natural" cadence is about 90-95, a little slower maybe 80-85 on the hills. Most research on cadence does say higher is better, but the BEST is your natural cadence. Works for me.
I know this is heresy in some circles to go by "feel" rather than speed/power/cadence/HR but that's my story and I am sticking to it!!

I bought a cheapo cadence transducer for use on the trainer this winter. It was very useful and served as a sort of poor man's power device because the combination of cadence and gear gave me a constant output. Obviously, that wouldn't work as well on the road.

Tomorrow looks good, but a chilly start for mid-May. We are doing a northerly route for our "Usual Suspects" ride....up around Marsh Creek if you know where that is.

It's more of a remark on the "spinning out" cadence than anything - that 100rpm would be the limiting factor is... odd. The desire to change gearing, because this spinning out situation occurs during downhills, does add to the oddness, though - hills with an decline to put me at 35mph, under power, are both short enough and rare enough to provoke a "why bother?" let alone to otherwise compromise my gearing in an effort to cater to those conditions, 'specially when spinning at 100 is completely unremarkable.
